Noticeable Absence

This season's camping, beginning in the spring with a fishing trip to the South Carolina coast and now with two more trips to the North Carolina mountains and staying at national forest campgrounds (Nantahala and Pisgah), I've not seen the first raccoon! Usually shooing them off is almost a way of life but simply have not been bothered or seen the little citters this year. Now, there's been plently of black bear activity in the mountain campgrounds but not so with raccoons. How about in other areas ... what's been the coon activity where your at?

Around Western Pennsylvania, the coons have been getting rabies, in big numbers! The game comm. is setting out bait with anti-rabies medicine in it. But, i haven't seen near as many on the roads here as there were last year! Maybe they don't like the new diet!
Our problem here is tame wild geese! They have settled in most every lake and pond and wet spot all over. Foolish folk feed them, and they stay year around, never flying south from cold weather. I think some near us died from lead poisoning about a month ago! yeah, the pond owner scattered lead shot all around his lake, and i think the geese swallowed too much of it, and sank! I haven't heard any geese honking lately!
One of our county parks has lots of "used to be nice" pavilions, but the geese have fouled them all so badly that the shelters and yards can't be used, including the picnic tables, etc. And, it is mostly because of the ill-informed feeding the "poor geese"! Heck-why fly away to other climes, when ya get fed good every day, winter and summer?! End of rant! Rustyj

The raccoon are thinning out here also.

The DNR started dropping a hybred or whatever you wish to call it, type of rattle snake out of helicopters last Summer to help thin the deer popluation. By drop, I means 100's of them at a time and mostly in the southwestern part of the state. This new breed of rattler has a pattern much like a Copperhead. But has rattlers. They also have a black ring approx 1/2" wide at the base of their tail where the rattles start. This new breed of rattler is very aggressive when compared to the Eastern or Timber rattler. The real kicker that gets people. It is against the law to kill them.

Back to the subject. People here think that these new snakes that can kill a full grown deer with one bite have also been takeing a toll on just about any animal that they can find to bite. Including racoon and rabbits. Disease I beleive is really taking the biggest toll on them.

Black Bear are now being seen in places that they have never been seen before. We have very healthly black bear popluation. At the mine where I work, we have been "baby setting" a mother and her three cubs. She has a tracking collor for the DNP have been interested in her. She has had three cubs each year for the past 6 years. Very rare for a female bear here to have that many cubs each year. The mama has some cute and lively little ones this year. We love to watch them play within 50 of us when we are working. We do and will not feed them. For one guy use to feed some bears at the site and they busted windows and ripped apart the inside of a lot of equipment looking for food..

We have no way to orchestrate the activities of our many beneficials. Perhaps the adults have chosen to lay eggs elsewhere, or maybe a predator or parasite has been after them. It simply might be a bad year for assassinbugs. The cycles of the natural world change according to factors that we cannot control. Just do the good job you've been doing at creating a healthy environment and I'm sure that you'll see an abundance of insects....good and not so good.

The summer was a tale of three salvia gardens. Two were well established and a third, a newly planted xeric one with no access to water. Here in SW New Jersey we saw weather much like Richard's in North Carolina, but with a slightly different pattern. Rainfall here was well below average from the beginning of June all the way into September, and while we probably saw a little more rain, most of it came in spotty thunderstorms that struggled to maintain themselves. In the well watered gardens the microphyllas and greggii and their hybrids grew quite well. There was continuous bloom on Orange Door, Raspberry Delight, Wild Thing, Navaho Bright Red and a half dozen others. This surprised me a bit. Even at the xeric site the same plants were in continuous if light bloom right through to frost. The size of these xeric grown plants was about half the size of the irrigated ones. Maybe they would have grown more if they had been fed in mid summer, but because of the drought I was afraid to do so. Some other sages never did reach their full size. Involucrata made no attempt to put out a few mid summer blooms like it usually does. Waverly also waited until September. Indigo Spires was not nearly as vigorous as in other years. As the summer went on the guarantica Brazil slowly declined and by early fall were mere shadows of their July selves. The only guarantica to thrive was Van Remsen, it put on a show of a lifetime out in the vegetable garden in August. Mulberry Jam grew just fine, but since it was my first try for the hybrid I have no idea whether it was "normal" Salvia subrotunda did not like the drought at all. The patches that were watered show no ill effects and behaved as usual but attempts to grow them in drier leaner soil verged on failures. Under similar lean conditions the various coccinea cultivars did better. In the xeric beds bloom was delayed by as much as a month and the plants were smaller, but they did OK. Upright macrophylla was new to me so I don't know if an August bloom is late for this species and although the bloom was light the beauty of the flowers made up for that. Splendens Pink from Ginny Hunt didn't bloom until almost September and never seemed happy, I may not grow it again. Uliginosa was skimpy and late. My main patch at a nearby nature center suffered its second year of pretty much total deer destruction. You have to respect a deer which can eat that nasty stuff. The big and total failure of the year was praeclara. The plants hardly grew and by the look of the leaves suffered from some sort of disease. Whatever that disease was it did not spread to the nearby subrotunda. Chiapensis and buchananii grew OK I guess although I would have liked to see more flowers on the later and an earlier bloom on the former. Both were new to me so maybe their growth was normal.

Builder won't take responsibility for permit omission

Thank you all for your responses! In answer to your questions: "Does this mean the final contract documents/quote specifically included the fireplace in question?" Yes, they did. The Final Estimate -- a separate document from the Contract, but part of the document package -- states that the builder will install the fireplace. (It includes a short desc. of the installation, and the price.) "Wouldn't you have had to pay the 800.00 either way?" No. The $800 was just to amend the permit. FWIW, I understand that we paid him to put the permit sets together, and that it was our job to submit them to the county. We did so with the belief that he would create accurate and complete permit sets. So, are we responsible for having the technical knowledge necessary to review a permit set for accuracy? (I should mention that when the County Reviewer found several errors in the plan, our builder corrected them. He did not say, "Oh, that's your responsibility dear client...) So, whaddya think? Do we have a leg to stand on? Thanks! Temple

What state are you in. Just so I'll know where to tip toe.

I scared a coon from under a bush by my fromt gate. So I'm wondering if he had rabies. This was at noon one day.

We also are seeing black bear where they never were before. Or at least we didn't know they were there.

I live in the Southwesten part of West Virginia.
The major counties that have had this new breed of rattle snakes dropped into them are, Lincoln, Boone, Logan, Mingo, McDowell and Wyoming.

Rabies, that word scares me. We are fortunate enough not have rabies here in Australia, *touch wood*, what a mess that would make with our native animals.

The hybrid snakes scare me too, heck snakes scare me, but add hybrid to anything makes it even more frightening. There should be a better way to cull the deers, I'm sure hunters could come up with an idea. This way the deer are going to thin out and then you'll still be stuck with the snakes. Stupid. Here in Australia we have major problems with species introduced to cull another pest. Cane toads are a major one, they were introduced to rid sugar cane of a type of beetle. Turns out they didn't like eating the beetle, prefering native frogs and breeding to unbelievable numbers.
It just makes me shudder.
