Growing Tomatoes

What am I missing here...?

I planted 10 varieties this year and I have lots of tomatoes coming along really well: Striped Cavern, Rutgers, Mex Midget, Grape, Rose, lots of San Marzano (for canning), and some others.

I did remove one Purple Cherokee cuz it just wasnt going anywhere at all.

However, the three Brandywines I put in have lots and lots of blooms, nice green foliage, good growth... but no tomatoes. None. What am I missing about Brandywines? Any ideas?

What does "coming along really well " mean ? Have you picked any toms at all ?
Brandywines do have a longer DTM (days to maturity)
And the hotter weather surely has been probmatic for many.
Just hang in there/

Check out the FAQs list here (direct linked on the forum page). Your question is a common one and you'll gain a lot of info there by reading about about Blossom Drop. Plus as already mentioned, Brandywine is a late season variety. And if you search 'flowers but no fruit' in this forum you'll find many in the same boat.

All this not to mention the unusual weather in most all of the country this year.

I think what they may be getting at is that you don't need to cut group 3 down as hard as is routinely done. They do bloom on new wood, but new wood grows from anywhere along the vine. If you don't cut it low to the ground, the new wood will be higher up. That may be where you want it. Many people say 'ah, but then you get bare stems at the base...' Sometimes that doesn't matter, or you can cut a few stems lower to provide cover at the base, while leaving most of the new growth higher up. I regularly do not cut back group 3 hard. I just selectively trim some lower stems and leave a lot of the rest fairly long. If there are more/longer stems, there are more places for new growth to rise, making more places for flowers to emerge. More expert clematis growers pooh-pooh my approach but it works for me and I'll keep doing it. I planted a Betty Corning last year so I don't have any relevant experience with that one yet. I know it's supposed to be very vigorous and long-blooming. A few pictures of group 3s not hard pruned: Jackmani Superba that had never been cut back hard for seven years: It'll be interesting to see what that one does this year because it got cut back very hard last summer when we took out the New Dawn roses that shared the arbour with it. The clematis on the chainlink fence on the side is also a Jackmani Superba that gets cut back to the top of the fence (4') each year. I'm not sure what the clematises on the copper fence are - they were supposed to be Huldine, but clearly aren't! They are only two years old in that picture (2010) so are still a bit skimpy. I prefer not to have to do a lot of pruning so most of my clematises are group 2. Last summer we replaced the New Dawn rose swag with clematises. They are a mix of group 2 and 3 but I intend to treat all of them as light/no prune. It'll be a couple of years before I can see if that will work well or not. My experience to date has certainly led me to believe that one does not have to rigidly adhere to the pruning 'rules' to get a showy display and happy vines.

Why am I having such a hard time buying Daltile?

Yes, they are expensive when it adds up. My tile store was charging $8.79 per pencil liner. I was planning to just have a simple accent line around the shower but it wasnt cost effective. My tile guy recommended a glass mosaic border instead at $18 sq ft saving me about $200. I mentioned using the Home Depot liners at 99ÃÂ¢ piece but he cautioned they may be varying widths. Floor deflection...What am I missing here?

merimom, you were basically fortunate, like alot of other folks. A knowledgeable tile contractor knows how important floor deflection is . Sad to say though, I would guess less than 10% of tile installers know this and actually check for it. I've been on many Pro and DIY flooring forums for 14 years now. Never once can I remember a Pro asking why his/her floor failed when they followed every established guideline. It's when they stray they can get themselves in trouble at times..... but not every time, same as your situation. The price you were quoted is ridiculously low, so beware that it is all done according to the book.

I have read and heard from multiple sources that tomatoes pollinate best when nights are cool and days are hot. It certainly does seem like the gardeners who have good-sized tomatoes in early spring get more tomatoes than I do with my Mother's Day tomato plants.

If you have blooms and no tomatoes, take out an electric toothbrush and give the plants some shake (or shake them by hand) to encourage pollination. This method seems to work for me.

Well my Tomatoes (2 Better Bush) are both basically dead at this point, I got around 150-175 tomatoes between the two plants. Planted them in early April and they are done and dead in mid August, produced about 75-85 tomatoes per plant.

They are Determinate plants though.

Now I planted 3 Dwarfs which are indeterminate that were basically planted first week of June.
The HEAT and HUMIDITY have taken their toll on them.
The plants are fighting off Blight and are dropping on average 2-3 blossoms per day.
I only have just 3 tomatoes set on one plant.
But up until the past couple of days the temps have been in the mid 90s to low 100s and even at night it has been close to 80.

Next year I am going to plant them as early as possible, probably in March in the Vegtrug under the greenhouse cover then transplant them in their growing pots when they get too large (22+") for the Vegtrug.
