Floor deflection...What am I missing here?

In this thread on the Kitchen forum, they are talking about the subfloor having a small enough deflection for tile. We DIY installed tile in our last home without ever checking such a thing. We just laid the backboard on top of the plywood subfloor. We never had a problem with our floor tiles popping.

So, what am I missing here? Did we just get lucky? We are about to lay 700 sq ft of tile throughout most of our 1st floor. What do we need to check to assure we don't have problems down the road?

Thanks!
