Surprise!!

Hiya to all the new members and a big hello to the old time regulars like JEN, Jo, Dale, Rusty, Brian, TP, Rustipup,Muffin and whoever I am missing. Seems like forever since I've been on. We got a newer RV in March and use it every weekend like the old one. I look forward to Fri. all week and then head out until Sun. night. We built a small dock on the lake for fishing, reading, watching the blue herons, turtles, ducks and whoever comes by. We did move to another site which I like better, it is bigger and a better view of the lake. Has anyone been camping lately? If so, where and if not, do you have any plans to? I guess Jen is in Maine by now and Brian is off on some cycle trip. Anyone ever hear from Rustipup since he left? I loved all his awesome pictures. Happy 4th and I will try to stop by more often. I miss the good ol days with the "gang".

Glad you have a new RV. I haven't even been this year and that is very unusual. Am planning to go soon though.

Yes, I guess Jen is in Maine by now and loving every minute of it. Can't wait to hear some her stories when she gets back.

Hi Lynda and Jo,
I haven't done much camping lately, hope to go camping this weekend. We've been pretty busy recently as we're switching from winters in South Carolina to winters in Alaska (we still plan to spend summers in Virginia). We're thinking October through February in general, but we need to get the house in South Carolina ready to rent or sell during October and November, so this year we'll probably start with late December through late March.

I love them all. I never had trouble growing nasturtiums by direct sowing. In fact, I think I used to read that they resented transplanting, but ws'ing is a little different when you plant them with the soil intact around the roots. But as soon as they started blooming nicely, the bottoms of the leaves would get covered with aphids, and they'd die. I had this white powder stuff I got and poofed on them (hard to get at the undersides), but it didn't work well, and I didn't like breathing that stuff or getting it on me plus I was working and didn't have time to trouble shoot like I can a little more now. Of course I wouldn't have known the hose trick which might have worked. Maybe conditions have changed. One year I had aphids early on the rose buds but not so bad the last two years, so maybe I've got a different balance going now. Or maybe not. Thanks for sharing your nice photos.

Jandey, you may be right. I scoured the web and looking at photos of Heidi Gold, the inflo has similar coloring and as the blooms open you can see the lavender edge on the back of the petals.

They are lovely surprises showing up in the middle of our lawn this time of year along with a double orange daylily. I've tried moving some to the front flowerbeds a few years in a row but they just disappear and show back up in the middle of the lawn right where they want to be lol. Another example of willful diva plants with their own ideas of where they are gonna grow and where they are not. ~Sjn

If they’ve really rooted you’ve done well. They're considered tricky, although this is the best time of year to try cuttings, albeit not in water. All mine started as self sown seedlings. If bay is common in your area have a look around the female trees. You may well find some babies. For the strongest flavour older leaves are more flavoursome than young growth. And they dry better without shrivelling so much.

So good to hear from you 3. Brian, where in Alaska are you? Do you plan on living there for a while? I would LOVE to go there sometime.
TP, our campground is Paradise Lake off of 206 outside of Hammonton about 1 mile before Atsion going North from Rt 30
It is 2 miles back into the woods and they have a 27 acre lake which is perfect for fishing, snorkeling and swimming. We have been going there for 20 yr now and they are finally cleaning it up, they have new owners, but the new managers really are doing a lot to improve it. All of the other places you mentioned we have been to, but the one we are now at is the only one with any room to their sites. I did like CF for the river though, but too close together. Where did you go when you lived here?

Here's old Rusty J., feeling chipper, and a few years older!
I have managed to get out twice so far this summer, with my motor home. I finally got it all back together, especially the cab overhang, which had rotted out a lot! New pressure treated wood will take care of the rot, and so will an extensive leak fixing deal!
I'm hoping to get out at least 3 more times this summer, mostly to our bluegrass shows. Sometimes i even get to go on stage with a band, so its fun to go there. Although, having to cough up $50 or more to fill the tank each time, isn't my idea of fun, or going camping any further than a tank full will take me.
And, the state safety inspection place seems to find expensive things that won't pass the inspection.
I'd like to sell it. Folks who could afford to buy it, don't want an older machine, no matter how good it is. I'd even trade it for a nice pickup truck!

JerseyPonder, Paradise Lake sounds GREAT! Glad to hear you're enjoying this year-after-year, that counts for a lot. My friend lives across the street from T.C. Run. My oldest buddy owns CF, I kind of "grew up" there as I lived a couple miles away on 40 acres across the river. If only I had a $ for every time I walked the "Mile Road"! I was honored to know his German grandparents who bought the land in the early '30s. Unfortunately the huge "Lodge" burned up a few years ago. And now it's set up for seasonals rather than weekenders. Our families were/are close. I know the area inside/out upside/down from riding a trail bike/horse/woods buggy in my youth. My heart lies there, even now, upriver at "Three Poles" near Harrisville. I sang bass at St. Mark's in Hammonton, our family church years ago. My wife doesn't care for the swamp.
