strange bird

Pecking for worms in garden South of France mid August, 1 solitary bird size of large blackbird, Body black BUT head,neck annd beak light reddish brown mottled. Long pointed beak reddish. Looks like the head of another bird stuck on top of a blackbird. Any ideas from anyone? We get a lot of passing migratory birds on their way to Africa.

It's lovely. But if you can't, it doesn't matter. ''So anything to do with lifestyle -- clothes, food, louboutin shoes , hats, bags or pens. Things that make you feel good. Oh, I'm so jealous of your grosbeaks and redpolls, Pudge! I think my neighbor is feeding too well, because the grosbeaks are always hanging around there and I'm lucky if they pop by for a brief visit. I did get some Evening Grosbeaks in for a good feed this spring and again this fall. That was a thrill to spot them, as I hadn't seen them before. I haven't seen a redpoll for about 3 years now. I find them so cute. The last time I saw a flock of them was early in the spring/late winter. Do they stay around all winter? Someone told me once that they cycle...and I don't remember why...was it their migration pattern maybe? I'd be interested to know if someone had any thoughts on that. I also had my first White Breasted Nuthatch yesterday! Another cutie and fun to watch...very vocal. He was still here this evening. RE: salt and birds...I'm thinking they probably require certain amounts naturally and find it somewhere, but with bird feeder fast-food that contains salt, they might eat alot of it because its easy to get and therefore get too much salt. Sound familiar? ie. potato chips! Gil, I wonder if the nuthatches would like your suet bars? Toots

You guys, the first launch I ever saw I was in Melborne on the beach at 6:30 in the morning with a bunch of on-line friends that decided to get together from all over the US, Canada and the UK! We all had terrible hangovers from the 3am partying the night before. I actually went in the ocean around midnight with all my clothes ON! The sight and sound that morning was most spectacular and did a lot to really sober us up. It was an awesome thrill to share with all these friends. The next day, the couple from England and I went to the space center, the rocket garden, etc. It was fascinating!

MsMarion - I grew up outside of Boston in horse country on the south shore. We had 26 acres of land (talk about property taxes...). It was an old New England farm house (built 1701) and the cleared property was a former Macintosh apple orchard. There were also a few pear trees plus, blackberries and concord grapes grew everywhere too. There was also a small stream that ran through the woods and opened to a field into a small pond. We used to go iceskating on it in the winter. I think that's where I got my love of nature. Sadly, over the years, the land was sold off to developers and several new neighbors cropped up where I used to walk in the woods with my dog or ride my horses. They damned up the river so the pond doesn't exist anymore--nor the river for that matter. How do you balance growth and progress with the destruction of the good things? I do like living near things that make my life convenient. Yet, every time I drive through Pinellas county and see the last bastian of wilderness being mowed under so the new WalMart (7-11, McDonalds,Freedom Bank...whatever...) can be put in, I just cringe.

first make sure you are logged in and then click on bird watching forum and then on top left click on post a message
type in subject and message and click on preview message and it will take you to another page and there should be a browse button to take you to your pictures on your computer. click on the picture you want to post and it should paste that into the brouse box. then click on submit button and it should post the message to the forum.
If you get error messag that picture is too big you might go back to your computer and resize it before you post again

Or go to this website: tinypic.com. Click on the browse button and locate the picture on your computer. Click on the picture to select it and then click the 'open' button. then click 'upload now' and you will be asked to copy the two words to show that you're a real person then click the 'upload now' button. The picture will be uploaded and you will see a page with 'share this image' at the top and under that you will see 'html for websites'. Click on the link in the box (it starts: <a href=) to select it then right click and select 'copy'. Come to gardenweb and post again in this thread. Inside that post right click and select 'paste'. When you preview the post your picture will show up.
The several steps make it sound complicated but once you start it's very easy.
