Crimea

I want You to know about the Crimean peninsula. It is situated in Ukraine and it is the great place for camping.

It has the unique nature. There are mountains covered with wonderful forests and deserted fields, and mud-baths, and seashores located in a quite small area. There are very vivid and diverse flora and founa in Crimea.

Welcome, Arthay: I don't think I'll be in your country any time in the future, as i don't fly on those airplanes, nor do i go out on the ocean in tiny ships! Although, i did have 2 sea cruises, during World War II, courtesy of my dear old Uncle Sam! Fortunately, i didn't have to travel far while i was across the sea, as i was in France while i was there.
I'd like to see things about your country. Are there any camping web-sites that we can access, to get information?
In our country, there are many places to camp! And, many places to visit, if you come here. Knowing the spoken language is a big help, too.
Many of the known places have web-sites, where you just type in the name, and something is sure to come up on screen.

About me: I'm almost 84 years old, still have all my senses, work every day, still driving our vehicles, play bluegrass banjo at jamm sessions once a week, and enjoy my dear wife's cooking! I also repair lawn mowers, etc. for spending money. I'm a disabled WW II veteran, lost my left foot due to combat wounds, but it doesn't hold me back.

Nice to see that some elderly people are as active as young or even more.
Talking about Ukraine I can't omit to say that my country is quite poor though it has everything to be rich. Ecology gets worse with years. Crimea is something special. It is the Autonomous Republic. The ecology there is much better then in "Big" Ukraine. There are great forest reserves. There are even some wild caves.

I eat quince fresh from the Russian supermarkets, its one of my top 3 fruits, not sure what variety they are but motivated me to plant some this year. Ones i sampled at supermarket are a bit starchy but sweet with hint of tartness, I love that fiber-y texture anyway and thinly slice it for people who can't handle taking a bite out of a quince :). I planted Karp's Sweet and Aromatanya last year, and getting Kaunching, Kuganskaya this year. Nice to know compost tea zaps rust. I was worried as the only one resistant to diseases i saw was the Aromatanya one.

As for how my quince trees are doing, see this other related thread: [Crimea quince fruit review[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/crimea-quince-fruit-review-dsvw-vd~5476273) Kuganskaya is pretty good eating quality, and no doubt if it was crossed with a pear it would lead to something completely edible out of hand. Virtually almost like a Granny Smith Apple but much more acidic. Astringency virtually isn't noticeable in just one or two small slices. Karp's Sweet is still alive and very slowly growing, but it's in a different climate (zone 10 ) so isn't growing as fast as the other quinces. It did set just a few blossoms though last year. It's late December and the tree still has green leaves which have not dropped. I don't really feel that the waxy peel and fuzz are impediments to out of hand eating, so not really concerned about that. (In any case, these "edible" quinces don't really have as much waxy fuzz as the other normal ones)

Kuganskaya, ripening up more now: I bought a quince at the regular market and did a comparison between the Crimea and the market quince. It really made me realize how edible these special quinces were by comparison. For the market-bought quince, it was like biting into something very dense, and the first bite was like swallowing sawdust. For the Crimea, it was only a tad bit dry, and that was really more after the second slice. I'm not really sure you'd even notice any astringency if you only had one slice and it was thinly cut. The Crimea, you really have to eat two or three thick-cut slices before it really starts becoming unbearably astringent. The Crimea is absolutely edible in comparison. I'm going to say the texture/flavor of Crimea leans a little more towards apple, and the texture/flavor of Kuganskaya leans a little more towards pear. Keep in mind this is in the Pacific Northwest, and most of the ripening period is going into the cool season. I'm sure they'd probably ripen better somewhere much further South.
