Does any one have a good site for buying camping gear. I have found one site, Explorepacks.com. But I am looking for more. Please send me recommendations.

What type of camping do you plan on doing? If it's primitive hiking, REI and Sierra Trading Post are great. If you're going for an easier approach with lakeside camping or State Parks, Cabela's has a nice assortment of gear. Just a few ideas. I'm sure if you search for "camping gear" on google you'll find tons of sites. Have fun!

hot showers while remote/wilderness camping

A friend of mine installed one of the car-topper luggage bins on top of his old travel trailer, then he put a large plastic water container in it, filled it at home, and when he got to camp, he had hot water all ready for his next shower! This only works good if ya park in the sun! Great for desert camping, but i would think all of your water would be hot out there! I bought a coach with a shower/ tub combination. My wife likes showers, but, if i want to take a shower, i have to remove my wooden leg, which spells DANGER!! So, i use the tub! When we went to Daytona beach on our honeymoon, i could walk to the waters edge, but couldn't wade! If i took off my leg, i couldn't walk to the water! RATS! And, you can bet i'd look goofy crawling across 50-60 feet of beach to get into the water! I haven't let my wood leg get in the way of anything else! I do anything i want to, including riding my motorcycle! Some wag asked my why do i ride a motorcycle with a wooden leg! I told him it would be impossible to ride without it! Any way, get out in the snow!! build a snow man, get the kids out in it--it'll be gone soon, and then you'll have to be getting the camping deal in order! by: Rustyj

OLDEST piece of gear you possess

My grandfather's kerosene lantern from the '20's or '30's me thinks (!), possibly as late as the 40's, and his extremely old-looking mess kit (used thick stuff back then!) and his tin cups seem pretty old and thick to me too. The oldest of all might be his harmonica! :) I also have his blue canvas tent that attaches to the side of his VW Riviera camper van (pop top). I found some sort of antique SOMETHING that I'd love your advice about. I have no idea what it is. It wasn't my grandfather's - it came from my grandmother's sister's estate. She lived in Illinois and I never really knew her. It's a metal, somewhat small-ish carafe of sorts with a cylindrical upward-pointing "spout" (?) and hinged lid (a little pointy at the top) and a wooden handle that pokes straight out. There are initials in fancy old cursive on it and a date of 1809 inscribed by that. Anyone know what this could be? Some sort of little tea pot? I can send a pic.

bizarre camping item you've seen

I would have to say our old neighbor Carol, Now she was an item. A few years ago we planned a three day camping trip with her and her husband. We can be ready to camp on a whim. These people started packing 4 days early! Were talking full size gas grill, A stove out of a camper , a queen size mattress AND box spring! We though they were moving . LOL.. The day came to go and we were ready at 8am They were still packing! We finally got out of there at 11:30 am. We got to our site and Carol jumps out of the van , grabs a chair popped open a beer and started barking orders as to what goes where? Did not lift a finger to help set up? About 2 hours later she was drunk as a skunk stumbling all over the place! We saved her from falling into the fire pit the whole weekend! We all had to take turns baby sitting her the entire time. Unbelievable! Boy we were glad when that trip ended, and of course run whenever they mention the word camping

A friend of mine and I are headed up through New England (NH, VT, and Maine in particular) for a week of tenting in mid august. any suggestions on good areas to do some non-campsite / fee-free / ranger-free camping? we're looking to do some backwoods hiking, a bit of mountaineering and want to stay away from any crowds or other people in general. any suggestions for some secluded sites?

I do most of my camping off a motorcycle, so backpacking equipment pretty much fits my needs also. I get 90% of my equipment from Campmor and REI. I'm partial to Cabela's Boundary Water II duffle bags, and to LLBean's Mt. Katahdin down sleeping bags. Other than a Sierra Designs Sirius 3 tent (I don't recall where I found it), these are about the only items I have that aren't from Campmor or REI.

Thought I'd add my 2 cents. If you buy from LLBean (great return policy!!!) or Cabellas, some people think the prices are too high. I found with LLBean, and I am sure it is the same with Cabellas, if you get the credit card, and sign up for e-mail flyers, the sale prices are very reasonable. The credit card purchases get free shipping and the (APR)rate is awesome. (Of corse we all pay off our purchases before End of Month:))Also, they have something like LLBean Bucks. But mainly, the sales flyers they e-mail me are very reasonable priced.

Explorepacks.com is a pretty cool site; good priced but they have an expanding selection. Need to grow a bit more; they can find gear for you not listed. That's a good feature. I do most of my shopping at campmor.com.
