bizarre camping item you've seen

So, what's the most unusual/bizarre item you've seen some other camper bring? I heard of a guy who came upon another hiker who toted a "suitcase" with all his gear in it because he didn't want to buy a new pack. He already had a fine suitcase... too funny.

once, a two headed peep (chicken) in a jar preserved. gross

Another time, I was asked if I wanted to see a guys family tree. "Sure" no harm in that...

Well, he rolled out this monster scroll and I spent the rest of the evening trying to look interested as he went from generation to generation. It was actually kind of neat looking, in retrospect. But, that night, it just was a bizarre thing to whip out.

So, what unusual, out of place, overkill, or bizarre thing has some other camper brought to the great outdoors?

A huge metal wall barrier type thing to place around the people around the fire in an experiment to reflect heat. Very strange when the guy showed up at our fire and proceeded to set this thing up!

Been thinking about this for a while and the only thing I can remember is this guy brought an actual red light that he must have "borrowed" from an intersection. Anyways, he wired it up and when you walked by it would go from red to green. I thought that was pretty weird to bring, but hey what do I know.

All of these are great deals! But I may have gotten the deal of a lifetime. Last year after Christmas I was in a big box store when several TC caught my eye. Of course I was hoping for an after Christmas deal and I found one. I brought a plant over to the cashier and asked the price. Her voice and face shower great surprise "2 cents!" There were 8", 6", and 4" pots. I'm not going to tell you how many I bought for my 56 cents! Talk about a problem trying to sneak them into the house without DH catching on. That omitted some of the classics! Capture the Flag: Everyone divides up into two teams at night. Each team has a "flag" -- usually just a shirt or bandana. The terrain is split up into two sides, one for each team. Each side positions their flag -- depending on your rules, either announcing where it is, or hiding it within certain constraints (say, must be roughly eye level, must be hanging from a tree branch, or whatnot). Usually, no "guarding" of flags is allowed (you can't have a person hang out within, say, ten feet of your flag, although they can pass through the area). If a member of the opposite team is on your side of the border and you spot them, you can "tag" them and bring them to your "jail" -- if you can catch them before they flee back to the safety of their side ;). Jail "guarding" is usually subject to the same constraints as flag guarding. If a person is "jail" is tagged by a member of their team, that person and the person they rescued get free passage back to their side. The winning team is the first one to grab the other side's flag and bring it back to their side without being tagged first. ----------------------- Skits: Classic campfire entertainment. Kids come up with skits to perform in front of all of the other kids (often figured out in advance of the trip if you haven't seen many before). These are generally performed with improvised props (camping equipment) or no props at all. Humor is the most common aspect of them, although sometimes pranks are involved. Googling should come up with a huge list of them. -------------- Commandoes: A game of flashlights. There is one base (a circle of arbitrary radius), one person trying to defend it with their flashlight, and everyone else who tries to sneak into it. Anyone who sneaks into it "wins" and gets to defend the base for the next round. The defender "defends" the base by shining the flashlight around, looking for people. If they tag someone with the beam, that person is "hit" and has to go far away and try to sneak up all over again.

I was invited to the wedding of friend's sister, along with another friend of ours. The bride was a pretty obnoxious, spoiled brat but we were very good friends with her brother and kind of felt sorry for her because she didn't really have any friends and wanted the biggest wedding she could have. The ceremony itself was fine but when we got to the reception, the MOB set my friend and me to work bartending. We were horribly embarassed (and had no idea how to bartend) but we muddled through it. What made it even more embarassing was when the MOB insisted on paying us at the end of the night. I have no idea where she got the idea that we were there to tend bar but suspect the bride had something to do with it. As an example of how the bride's brain worked (or not) we visited her home a while later. I was helping her with something in the kitchen and noticed a bunch of tiny labels sticking off of a windowsill. When I asked her what they were doing there, she said that her parents had given her some Waterford glassware they had gotten on a trip to Ireland. When she served guests she wanted everyone to know they were Waterford so she would leave the labels on the glasses, then take them off before washing them and then put them back on.

Does free count? I’ve worked at two nurseries. The first one, my boss sent me home with a small car load because they all looked ratty from the previous season. The roses went home with me otherwise they would have ended up in the dumpster. I only kept Bewitched and 2 coffee bean roses From that bunch. I gave the others away to the pizza guy and the neighbors. The second and current nursery allowed me to pick out a number or roses at the end of the season some Austin’s, Soul sister, dark desire, honey perfum, and a few others. I’m not sure how they do in my garden because this will be their first spring in my yard I can’t waiT to see some blooms. I think the cheapest I’ve ever paid for a bareroot rose is probably about Three bucks, but sharing cuttings of old roses and digging up unwanted ones have been the best deals for me.. Though I’m about out of room. Mmmm doesn't help I also have seedlings , less and less space not to mention my husbands rose project. It’s a bit horderish at my house.... there are lots of roses in pots....

The group took rule #3 a little to seriously.

The campground did not want fire outside of the fire pits.

Hey I wouldn't leave home without my woodstove. Mine weighs in at a mere 30lbs though. It has a spark arrestor on top of the chimney, uses way less wood, and cooks a great loaf of bread. There are a few Forest Circus(Service) folks that consider it a dangerous item in a campground. I also have a solar charged, gas fired, electric pressure shower I take camping. I only thought this stuff was over the edge until I was talking to one of my campin' buddies the other night, he just bought a diesel fired house heater to take camping that will heat a 2000 sq ft house. This guy is the King of Bizarre Camping Equipment, man does he have some cool stuff.

This isn't the most bizarre but I always find it odd when people haul their full sized backyard propane barbeque grill with them to the campground! I know some people prefer not to cook on the fire which for me is hard to believe! What better way to do it? But, they do make smaller more portable grills than those huge backyard ones! I guess to each his own!

I would have to say our old neighbor Carol, Now she was an item. A few years ago we planned a three day camping trip with her and her husband. We can be ready to camp on a whim. These people started packing 4 days early!
Were talking full size gas grill, A stove out of a camper , a queen size mattress AND box spring! We though they were moving . LOL.. The day came to go and we were ready at 8am
They were still packing! We finally got out of there at 11:30 am. We got to our site and Carol jumps out of the van , grabs a chair popped open a beer and started barking orders as to what goes where? Did not lift a finger to help set up? About 2 hours later she was drunk as a skunk
stumbling all over the place! We saved her from falling into the fire pit the whole weekend! We all had to take turns baby sitting her the entire time. Unbelievable!
Boy we were glad when that trip ended, and of course run whenever they mention the word camping

These are great! I guess a bizarre "item" could be a neighbor...too funny!

p.s. did they get a "Building Permit" from the county assessor before they set up "CAMP?" I'm still laughing!
