Baby Waxwings snuggled for the night

These baby waxwings left the nest this morning (while I was at the dentist and missed the whole thing) but they are still hanging around their "home" tree while mom and dad continue to bring home the meals. They are so darn cute.

Well, it's 39 degrees here this morning. And tonight they predict going down to 37 so it'll definitely be around 30 here at my place - so another freeze. And Monday night is still looking frosty. But...after that - should FINALLY BE WARM enough to plant out annuals, etc. So very tired of wrapping everyone up. I had taken a chance mid-week and planted out my Yvonne's salvia. So last night I had to cover them. And again tonight. And most likely Monday night. In the misty mornings my place looks like some kind of ghostly graveyard what with all the sheets and such. Hope everyone else will make it through this cold snap. Now if someone would just SEND US SOME RAIN. We haven't had any rain for nearly 10 days and we really need some. Everyone around us gets it but it always dissipates when it gets close to Stark county. aaaarg! Kris (who is always complaining about something) ;-D

Mama bunnies leave their babies for quite awhile during the day. If I were you I'd make one last visit and remove the dead baby. I guess it's the one with blood on its bottom. Then leave the nest and don't visit again. When you visit the nest you leave a scent trail for other predators.

Thank you, everyone! My son loves hearing that "he done well". LOL He is a perfectionist, and loves to work with his hands. Once he sees someone doing something, it only takes him one try to do it himself...usually much better than the person he saw doing it in the first place! Mago~ The pinwheels, depending on what type fabric you use (I have used flannel before), soften up with each washing and really start to look more realistic. They keep their positions- the way they are facing- but they round out a bit, I guess you could say. The pinwheels are just squares that are folded over twice and pinned to a background square.Then the four background squares are sewn together like a regular 4-square. So the pinwheels really have some substance, and are great for baby quilts- babies like to pull on them. I always make sure I double stitch the blocks, just to make sure that they don't come loose later. We have 6 kids, and the oldest 2 boys are in a church group- Pathfinders. It's much like Boyscouts. They earn honors for learning different skills. Quilting & sewing is one of them. Doing laundry & other household chores is another. There are 150 honors, more or less...I forget the total! But both boys do the household chores regularly anyway, so they already have the honors associated with them. I rarely do the dishes or sweep the floors anymore. :O) I just tidy up after the littlest ones. It's a team effort, really. Everyone pitches in around here. My oldest- he's 13- loves to cook, so he does that every chance he gets. He'll be quilting next week, so we'll see what he comes up with!

Yeah, in the early evening as it was starting to get darker, they started to line up on a branch and cuddle in close together for the night. They kept switching branches (trying to find just the right one I guess), until I couldn't see where they were because of darkness. This morning one is really practicing his flying. Actually flew from their home tree to a cherry tree I have about 20 feet away. He's probably the one that was the first to jump from the nest to a tree branch. There is always one risk taker lol. They sure are fun to watch. This is the first time I've ever had them nest in the yard. I offered them lots of wool for their nest and was rewarded with them staying in the yard. Three other pairs took the wool and flew to different locations. I now have a pair of waxwings coming to take the wool from the empty nest. I read that they very often steal from other nests. I even had a waxwing earlier come and try and steal some wool from the nest while the mother was sitting on the nest. He was pulling the wool from the bottom lol. They are such beautiful birds.

The babies are delightful! Is the wool you offer yarn? or small pieces of wool fabric?

Claire, I had an old woollen quilt that was worn out so I started pulling the carded wool out, stretching it out as fine as I could. I placed it in a berry basket and hung it in my cherry tree. I had four sets of waxwings and now some goldfinches taking it as well. Waxwings just love wool. I had to refill the basket daily. The nest is practically all wool. Catherine, the tree is a flowering thunderchild crab. It's an ornamental tree with small apple-like fruit on it. They don't seem to be eating the fruit now but in the spring the robins really like it. The nest is about 15 feet from the ground. It is right outside my dining room window so I have had a perfect view of the nest and now the babies.
