Hey Jen: Did you see the story about the Devil on TV last week? I tuned in late and only saw the last of it! Great spook story!

And, where have you been? Haven't heard from you.

I seem to have gotten over my fuzzy brain problem, with some hard work! And, i'm working on the coach, fixing the front overhang where it leaked and rotted the wood.I won't be going on any long trips, but some local 60-75 miles. 10 MPG is a bit hard to enjoy a long trip. The lawn mower business is down some. I think people are looking for the old reel mowers again!

Rusty, as a boy my father and I visited an acquaintance of his just west of New Gretna on HWY 542. F. Pearce lists this home as the last reported sighting of the Jersey Devil in his book, "Heart of the Pines". As a youngster exposed to this and other scary stories, I worked on my own fears until, at age 12, I could walk alone deep into the forest at night without a flashlight, spend a few minutes out there, and then walk back home. And missed the 'Devil.

Just got the bad news about the motor home. Needs back wheel cylinders for the brakes! Probably be $400 or so!

I'd sell it cheap! Runs good, but i can't afford to run it on my retirement income, which isn't all that great!
Here in Pa., ya can't have an un-inspected vehicle sitting in yer yard! The powers that be will come and make ya get rid of it, for junk price!
Well, enjoy yer tent camping! I wish i had a small tent trailer.It'd be enough for just me to camp in! I'd trade the coach for one, even up!

Yes, Calliope, it can be confusing, especially to someone who is still learning. Decided to see what happens when converted to ounces. Turns out 200 grams is slightly more tha 7 ounces. Not much tomato and veggies for the 1/4 cup acid called for. Certainly much more acid than my 5 pounds of tomatoes, 4 1/4 cup of veggies and 1 cup of vinegar. I know that I shouldn't compare Annie's recipe to NCHFP's but it does make one pause. And I'm still sitting here wondering how thick is TOO thick for the salsa? I personally don't eat salsa. My grandkids love it and I make it for them. Mine turned out as thick as "Newman's Own", but is that too thick for home processing? The instructions say that it should be thin enough that the veggies stay suspended in the liquid. I don't understand that since the opposite seems to be true to me. When the sauce is thin and liquidy the veggies are not suspended; when the sauce is thick the are suspended throughout. I know it's me. Everyone here seems to get it. I guess I'm just a slow learner and very skiddish at the moment. Actually more scared now that I was 7 years ago when I first ventured into the world of canning.

You're welcome, Sammy. I haven't even reviewed the list myself, and it is an old list. I suspect I still grow some of the plants on the list now, but I also know that I have found even more that produce great here since 2008. With thousands of varieties to choose from, we have many options, and most of them will perform here in a typical year. It can be harder to get great production in an extremely dry year or an extremely hot year, especially if the heat arrives early. One factor that seems to matter more than the variety selection is simply getting them planted early enough that they have plenty of time to set fruit before the heat arrives. Brandywine Sudduth's is still my own personal favorite, but it produces erratically---great in cooler, rainier years and not very well at all in hot, dry ones. I tend to grow it anyway most years on the chance that maybe this year will be the year a cool, rainy spring helps it be very productive. Although it wasn't on my Grow List for this year, I saw them in a store yesterday and promptly bought two. I probably jinxed myself by buying them and we'll probably have an insanely hot spring, but I hope that doesn't happen.

There are TONS of threads here about paste tomatoes but I'll just list the ones that I think are really good, commenting that most of my tomato friends don't use paste tomatoes for sauce. They use the BEST tasting varieties they have since most paste toimato varieties are not noted for excellent taste and just cook the sauce down a bit more and they also try to use any dense fleshed non-paste of which there are many including some excellent heart varieties. Anyway, here are some paste varieties that I think have decent taste eaten raw that you might consider for sauces if you want to stick to just known paste varieties. All are red and high yielding and have wroked well for others. Heidi Mama Leone Ludmilla's Red Plum Sarnowski Polish Plum Opalka ( Jersey Devil is about the same as are several other long reds or similar) Tadesse or Wuhib I've grown Borgo Cellano and don't like the taste at all but maybe it's just me. And you speak of disease tolerance. ON LI you shouldn't be bothered by any of the systemic tomato diseases such as Fusarium, Verticillium, etc., which leaves you with the same problem all of us have and that's the foliage diseases and with just a few exceptions that aren't of use for the home gardener, there are no varieties, hybrid or OP that have any significant tolerance to the common foliage diseases. In addition, most paste varieties are very susceptible to Early Blight ( A. solani) and BER which is why so many folks use some non-pastes for sauce. And some use pastes AND other non-paste varieties for their suace. Hope that helps. Carolyn

You've got to live really far out of town to even hope to get away with that one.

If anyone goes down to S. Jersey to camp, keep your eyes open for the White Stag of Shamong.

I camp with the Jersey Devil every weekend....LOL. We camp in the Pine Barrens, thats where our campground is, in the heart of the barrens. Last weekend we were sleeping in bed for a change (we sleep in a tent often by the waters edge) I swore I saw something in the doorway looking at us. Just as I said it to hubby he grumbled something and the TV turned on by itself. I looked at him , he looked at me and we were freaked out. Weird thing is the 2 dogs never barked or anything. Next day we laughed about it, but we do not know what it was or how the tv turned on. Do you suppose?????
