Growing Tomatoes

Attached is a picture of todayÂs harvest! I would like to thank Dr Carolyn and other GW members who took the time to help me choose OP varieties and deal with foliage diseases.

This year, my plants are much healthier; I grew all of them from seed, put them into containers, most of them self watering, and was very vigilant on removing lower leaves to avoid soil splashing. So far (knock on wood), my plants are healthy and are producing some GREAT tomatoes. The only one that has not set fruit is Omar Lebanese; weÂll just have to try that one again next year.

Our favorite by far is Cherokee Purple; it keeps producing tons of great tasting tomatoes. ItÂs what an heirloom tomato is all about; you just canÂt buy one of those in a store! Our second favorite is SunSugar, the kids just eat them like candy. Legend is good with a "tangy" taste, while Stupice and Better Boy are about the same taste wise Â a little bland. However, Cherokee Green is in a class of its own, "seriously cool" according to the younger members of my family.

Again, thank you all for your help and I enjoy reading this forum to learn more about growing tomatoes.

That sure is one beautiful platter of tomatoes! This is our first season growing Sun Sugar, and we are loving them as well. It is the cherry tomato plant that just wont quit ...and I am happy with that.Still waiting on the Cherokee Purples, but it is so worth the wait. :)

Sun Sugar has been a great tomato for us too. Even with all of the heavy rains (and some hail), not one of the little beauties have split. It's the only hybrid tomato I will keep growing next year.

I also use red plastic on my containers, mainly to keep the soil from splashing on the tomato leaves, but you also might try it to increase harvest time next year.

Congrats, Mostone! That is so cool to find caterpillars on the plants at the nurseries. I have ended up buying way more fennel and rue because of finding cats. Be prepared that the butterfly may not emerge this year. I still have a chrysalis from last year! I have several butterfly cages made from large clear plastic containers (pretzels, animal crackers from Sams Club). I cut out 3 of the sides, leaving the corners for stability, and covered the holes with screen material using clear silicone bathroom caulk for "glue". These are easily sterilized between batches of cats. It is very important to sterilize cages and utensils for the monarchs, they are very susceptible to OE spore and viruses. (To sterilize: make a weak bleach solution and soak for 15-20 minutes and rinse well with water.) Enjoy the new obsession, it is very rewarding. Mechelle

Every once in a while, over the past few weeks, I fight my way out of a pile of glittery ribbon and pine cones, throw down my glue gun and come up for air. It's been a busy time in the craft room and no rest for the wicked just yet - a couple more weeks to go. I fear I'll be all Christmassed out before it even gets here. I have one night of entertaining to plan for (a fancy one like Hyacinth's candlelight suppers - anyone watch Keeping Up Appearances? I love that show). We used to do fancy shmancy a lot but since we moved here, hardly ever. Seems that more people prefer chili on a bun on a paper plate and a bottle of beer than 3 forks next to a china plate and a wine glass. (big sigh) Oh well, the joys of country living. It's pretty normal for GW activity to slow down this time of year, but of the dozen or so forums I check in on most days, I'd say it's way, way down. It changed a lot after the iVillage and annoying ads takeover. Some ads still sneak thru my adblocker and irritate the heck out of me, I can't imagine new people coming to the site and not having an adblocker in place - they'd probably be just as glad to quickly leave. Do you think people who are able to garden year round have the luxury of not going full tilt for 3 months out of the year, and therefore don't get burnt out? I enjoy the winter break and doing something different. By September I'm tired of gardening and my mind starts thinking about downsizing the garden (but I won't). By Christmas I'll be so tired of crafting I'll be taking an oath to never do any again (but I know I will). We've been a bit spoiled with the weather lately (a lot of us have, right?). But I think tonight something is blowing our way so maybe our brown yards will be white by morning.

Beautiful assortment of tomatoes you have there!

I picked my first ripe Bull's Heart tomatoes this morning....it is 14 oz. and looks to be about the average size of that variety for me this year. Tasty, but not the best flavored heart tomato by any means.

how beautiful! I love my Cherokee Purples also! will have to try Cherokee Green next year--are they like CP tastewise at all, or kind of zingy/tart like Green Zebra?

Wenderina: Cherokee green tastes nothing like Cherokee Purple. Many people describe it as spicy, but we found it to be sweet and juicy, really a unique flavor for a tomato. Although my picture doesn't show it, the bottom of the tomato is quite yellowish and I waited until it was soft to pick it.

I should also add that Cherokee Green is the first green when ripe tomato we have tried ;-)

I love the rich and intense flavor of Cherokee Chocolate as well as the CP! I grow this variety every year and try 5 others hoping to find more that I like as much...

Bluemater: Is there a difference between taste in Cherokee Chocolate vs Purple? I thought they were the same plant except for color.

tomatogreenthumb: That's a nice size tomato you have there! Hope you get a lot more. What other varieties are you growing this year?
