Carolina Wrens...I have NEVER seen this!

These little cuties have nested in a wall planter for 2-3 yrs. up until this season, though they're daily vistors to my yard.

Back in late winter, I noticed a nest on the inside ledge of a large column on my front porch and am pretty sure this was a nest from last season...I think!

Today, I noticed 2 Carolinas flying about and checking out this old nest. Then lo and behold, I saw them taking nesting material, and actually reconstructing this old nest to form their traditional "tunnel" nest! My nest boxes are currently empty as my resident nesters, bluebirds, chickadees and brown headed nuthatches, have long since raised their families but are at the feeders every day.

This is absolutely amazing, especially since our nesting season began early this year due to early warm temps...and currently we are in an oppressive heat wave with heat indexes in the triple digits! (Deep South) And rebuilding an old nest!!!????

Sometimes there is no explantion for Mother Nature! I have a great view of this unusual activity from my home office window and sure hope all goes well.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

We have a nest under an eave of our porch and about early June the robins rebuilt it and nested in it for the third time! Have fun with your Carolina Wens donna.

Sounds like they will be in the shade, right? I'm sure they'll do fine. Those little guys will nest just about anywhere. I love Carolina Wren babies. With their short little tails and little wings, they are so adorable.

Ray, You and Dana are an inspiration. I can only imagine the grittiness involved in your day-to-day challenges. We in Carolina and across the country relate to your real life struggle. You are brave beyond words and your faith is awe-inspiring for me. I grew up a block from Chappelle H.S. and then in Ocean Springs, that formerly beautful township on the Old Spanish Trail of the Gulf coast of Mississippi. I am ashamed to admit to you that my courage is so short in supply, I have been putting off a trip to visit friends and relatives there, trying to work up courage for it in August. Fascinating! We certainly enjoyed looking at it during that September - it was growing rampant right behind the beach front house we had rented for the month. Again, I thank you for solving the mystery for me. I'd looked high and low for the answer and had never found it until now.

2 carolina wrens fighting to the death

I have been told and have read that the loser will give up before they are killed, that they take their likin and go on to mend then look elsewhere for a mate. However some years ago I did find a dead male Tanager in the garden with scarlet feathers in his mouth, I was advised they don't fight to the death but i am quite sure he did not commit suicied. Lets hope the one losing in your battle gave up and went home.

A Question about A Carolina Wren Nest and Eggs

Hi! A couple weeks ago we noticed 2 Carolina wrens building their nest in our fern right outside of our kitchen window. We were so excited! Then a few days ago we no longer saw them around and sadly thought that they had abandoned their nest. This morning we were talking about removing the nest from the fern and when I peeked, I saw 5 eggs! Now we are concerned if they have abandoned their eggs :( Is this possible? We haven't seen them around at all. What time of the day do they incubate? Would it be possible that we are missing their timing? We are not morning risers. Agh! I'd be so sad if by any chance we scared them away :( We have been very respectful, however sometimes we would open the window. I do not know how long the eggs have been there. I thought that as soon as they were close to being done building their nest, they had left. Do they first build and then lay their eggs? Thank you so much!

Eastern pheobe's will also rebuild an old nest.
I have had a nest on the front of my house, behind a large canadian hemlock for 4 years and they rebuild each year. Really interesting to sit on the porch and watch them.
