FOOD from the great outdoors

What wild edibles have you sampled in the great outdoors?

Did you eat like the folks in Survivor show?

Or did ya come across some huckleberries?

Now, my one friend says I should leave any edibles for the animals who rely on the outdoors for a living. hmmm...

Still, it's fun to sample some of the edibles out there.

p.s. not responsible if you eat any of these things here and get ill...

Huckleberries, wild strawberries, Mormon tea, manzanita berries, teaberries, pine nuts, blackberries, raspberries.

Never ate any mushrooms... don't trust what I'm picking...

wow! with that inventory, I didn't realize I WAS eating all the poor animals food! Until I started the list, I had no idea I was eating so much!

So, what wild edibles do you see or consume whilst in the great outdoors?

It's hard to list all of the things that we eat from the West Virginia woods and waters.

This time of the year one can live and eat well from forging.

Molly Moochers (a Mushroom). Some people will actually fight over them if they are hunting them and come across a batch at the same time.
Mustard Greens
Kale
Ramps (much like garlic)
Cattails (need to be young) Taste like boiled buttered patatos.
Polk

Other foods that can be easily found here are at different times of the year.

Many different types of nuts. Butter, Walnuts, Chestnuts etc.
Many different berries. Black, Rasp, Blue, Huck, Goose,

Then they are Mints such as Peppermint, teaberry.

Wild game and fish from deer, turkey, rabbit, to Trout, Catfish, Musky to name a few.

I grow a few things in a small garden but I could honestly live like a mountain man and beleive that I would be more healthier than just eating store bought chemical packed foods.

I stick to the fruits like blueberries and raspberries! Nothing like pancakes with fresh picked wild fruit from around your campsite!

It was good to see you again. We love Myers. Go about once a month and just wander around. Did you get any of the Red Stella daylilies? We like to go on a rainy day. That looks like fun and delicious eating. What a cozy spot to spend a rainy evening. Tapas places have started to appear in the U.S. but they are not widely understood here. They are not part of most people's dining repertoire. You don't hear people say, "Let's go out for tapas" as you would here people suggest going out for dim sum, which in a sense is the Chinese equivalent (assorted small items) and has caught on. Maybe tapas will catch on. Thanks for the photos and descriptions. Jim

Last time I was in Miami I ate at a Cuban place on Lincoln road. You know those tostones, the double-fried plantains? This place had made a little bowl out of the tostones and filled it with a tomato-based shrimp sauce. Imagine the best shrimp creole you've ever had, in a bowl made of the most sinful carbohydrate you've ever had...OMG it was wonderful. I described this dish to a Puerto Rican friend who said, 'Hey, that's not cuban, it's mofongo. A Puerto Rican dish.' Whoever invented it, it was fantastic. And I always will try Caldo Gallego if it's on a menu...

How Babette brought joy to the utterly sense-starved, ascetic townsfolk and their bitter, frigid and abstinent lives, lifting them at least for one evening to a truer meaning of life than they had ever let themselves experience. That Babette gave up everything to "feed" them in this manner, to share her gifts, to thank them, to deliver a dream... still an astonishing film.

...blueberries and raspberries cook in their own juice. Mixxed with regular corn syrup poured on Pancakes...

Or better yet. Home made Maple syrup...

Good one Dale. About 20 yr. ago we used to camp at a lake(Jen, remember Wilson Lake back in the day) we would get up in the morning and pick blue berries and always make, or attempt to make blue berry pancakes. They never turned out right, but the fun we had trying.

I guess I'm a little late, but, we always take:

Macaroni & cheese, or some sort of boxed pasta
Cabbage (for foil packs)
Potatoes
Canned meatless products (tuno, hot dogs, etc.)
Beans
Peanut butter & jam sandwiches
Oatmeal
Fruit cocktail or canned peaches
Bananas and chocolate chip pancakes... Mmmm

We try to bring things that don't require refrigeration.
We also bring TANG, and powdered milk for this reason.
