a bird call I've never heard before

Hi. I've lived in the Southeast all my life and have never heard what I heard today.

It was in a forest of hardwoods & pines, with a small creek nearby. I heard a call about once a minute, and it sounded like:

"ta-daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!"

All one pitch, pretty high, much louder than the local songbirds. Very clear whistle, no tremolo.

I tried to follow it into the woods, and once I caught a glimpse of a bird flying overhead, maybe about the size of a seagull but with a more sleek silhouette. The call was moving from tree to tree, so I know it wasn't a grounded baby.

I'm worried it may have been an escaped exotic, like a parrot. Does anyone know what kind of bird would be making that call at this time of year?

If it's an escaped parrot it might not last long if it doesn't know how to evade local predators.
On the other hand it could be a juvenile Sharp-shinned or Cooper Hawk. They definitely are squealing like that in my woods..faked out my mentally limited Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier on top of the hill yesterday and he went barking into the woods after an imagined rodent.

GermanStar , Seeds... Lol... are you referring to METAL chips. In Order to make our own cactus statue ? If that's the case I'll take$ 20lbs. Just to start. Notolover, Lol.. your right! I must of looked pretty desperate out there, and I'll be honest, I was going to get a pup one way or another . Ashau, Very nice indeed thanks for sharing, I am always amazed how cacti & succulents grow so vibrant and look so healthy when ever you get closer to the ocean. (1) Home-made mac & cheese with roast chicken (2d dish) & maybe a salad (and a succotash could be nice). (2) Chili? Popular -- can be done with beef, chicken or ground turkey, fresh corn bread on the side is quick and easy to do in volume. Corn on the cob -- halved maybe. A salad -- nothing time sensitive if you're concerned about cooking for a crowd and not accustomed to it. (3) Pasta -- easy to do batches on the pasta itself and a nice basic fresh sauce is easy -- saute chopped/minced carrots, celery, onion and a sweet red pepper in olive oil, for a few minutes, then add chopped garlic for a minute, then the tomatoes (good canned tomatoes are way better than bad fresh ones, although if you have good fresh ones at volume that's terrific -- 3/4 in the food processor and 1/4 chopped or cubed). Kosher salt, a little pepper. Some white wine a couple of minutes before the end. It's easy to augment this with meatballs or pan cooked sausages for people who want meat (chicken -- any meat that seems right). Good bread, a nice salad, maybe some oven-roasted asparagus . . . easy meal for 10 or 20 or 30.

Wow is right. It actually looks a lot like the Brazilian Duros I'm engaged to (just a little more variation and movement than my particular slabs.) I was at M Texeira (NJ) a few weeks ago and they had nothing like it. Interesting too, I think that the more movement ...rivers, as you call them... and the increased hardness are "coincident". In other words, it has more movement than most soapstone because it has less talc and more of some other element. And that's also why it is harder. Same thing with my Duros...wonder if they're from the same quarry?

Hi, again. Original poster, here. Thanks for that link -- it's a very extensive list!

Unfortunately, my mystery bird wasn't on there. I clicked on every single bird on the list, even ones I'm familiar with.

I first heard him in my neighbor's woods about 10 acres away, but this evening I heard him in my own back yard. His call is a little shorter now, but it's still the same "ta-daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!" A very clear, single-pitched whistle, no trills or warbles.

Anyone else have a guess? My husband's out there now with the binoculars trying to locate him so we can get a better look. I am worried that he's someone's parrot or other type of exotic bird.
