Camping at Gettysburg, PA.

When i was around 10 yrs. old, i went to Gettysburg for the dedication of the Pennsylvania Memorial to the war dead from the Civil War. I'm not sure of the year, but around 1934 or so. It was a 2 day trip up and back, driving 3 cars of various vintage, with several uncles, my father and my grand-father, and a cousin. And sleeping in a flea bitten campground along the way. On Saturday, we attended the unveiling, heard the big shots speak, and walked around talking to the old veterans who were there.

Then, we went to Hagerstown, Md. for lunch, and got to playing music on a street corner. My Uncle Vernon Fennell played fiddle, and Uncle John McCall played harmonica, and several locals played the jug and an old guitar! Oh, what a swell time we had! Folks were tossing money into a hat, until the police came and ran us out of town!

On the way back over the mountains, we stopped at a picnic area and gas station for supper. While nobody was looking, Cousin Red stuck one of those fire-cracker whiz-bangers on his Dad's engine. Uncle came out to start the engine to leave! Off went the whiz-banger thing in a cloud of smoke, and uncle jumped out coughing and swearing!

I was rolling on the ground laughing, cousin Red was hiding, and such a stir in that place i had never seen before!

Well, we finally got home that evening, with many stories to tell about that camping trip! And, i'll never forget the look on Uncle's face when that thing exploded!
