I have her Christmas book because it was easier to pay for it than send it back - it was sent to me unsolicited. It's a pretty book and has some things worth doing, I think. The one show I saw was fine, too. But I have read about her overdone style, seen parodies, etc. I think we want to bash her because she's overexposed. She should lay low for a while. I think he is really playing up that awful stereotype of the swishy decorator, and doing a dis-service to all people in the field--he's going to give himself an aneurysm with that gushing. Martha Stewart is the anti-Christ, sent down to earth to make all normal women (especially those who work full time) feel like worthless slobs. It's not that she doesn't have good idesas sometimes, but she always does things the hard way. She can't just go to Michaels and buy a grapevine wreath like normal people, she has to cut the twigs, soak them, and make the damn thing herself. She also is into really, REALLY expensive stuff. Check out what she charges for her paint. I like to take some of her ideas and recreate them for 1/10th the cost. By the way, have I been under a rock? Who is this Jennings woman? I have tried to think of a man who would be like her, sort of set himself up as the epitome of good taste and as a representative of the western version of masculinity, but I couldn't come up with one so it's hard to know if we would knock him too. I think that what frustrates us so much is the very mixed messages we get, that we should be modern women who don't have to stay at home in the kitchen like June Cleaver but that our families should be well looked after. It all comes back to mom. Martha makes us feel inadequate because she seems to do it all: have a growing, successful business and career and do all of the home warming stuff that looks so fuzzy and cozy and perfect. We can never be like her, nor, I suspect, would we want to be. Hovever, we still feel uneasy and ambivalent about her and what she represents. We criticize her but when you read the postings about all the wonderful dinners, handmade decorations and Christmas gifts that we are capable of handling we're more like her than we realize. Martha just goes WAY over the top. She's a lot like us but out of control. On another note, I think, although I haven't had it confirmed, that Martha-wannabe Lynette Jennings is Canadian. Glad to hear your optimism Rusty! Hope your cold is mostly a memory now! I think I got the camping bug from my folks too. Dad was FAA and Mom an RN so they criss-crossed the US 8 times during his contract site visits implementing systems to enhance air travel safety. When they lived in NJ Buddy Holly was one of my dad's friends. He told me that celebrities were different in those days. For example, when he was a 15-year-old on the Boardwalk selling hot dogs across from Ed McMahon and his umbrella-covered Chop-O-Matic display, Danny Kaye would come waking out on breaks from The Steel Pier in Atlantic City and shake hands with everybody. Those were different times indeed! I once asked my mom why we always lived in our 30-foot trailer (which also carried her rock collection and my swingset) all over the country instead of renting apartments. My mom said that in those days apartments were about all pretty seedy affairs, full of roaches and decrepit and not worth the trouble to burn down, so we bought the trailer. Thank God they did, otherwise I'd probably miss a lot of fun travel and now have something good to share my own kids. 2009 will be a good year of camping, even though I'm into my 6-month of unemployment as a chemist, we still do get out with friends, this fall my youngest daughter and I to Ocotillo Wells in the desert and two weeks ago to the Glamis Imperial San Dunes. My new Optima 12-volt power system is working out great, I never run out of juice and can power plenty of LED lights and music. I can't wait until warmer weather so we can get out under the pines soon too, the ABATE rally in Lake Elsinore City Campground every Mother's Day comes to mind.

Last year I only had one pair of slip on - no back loafers type leather shoes (easy airport shoes). My feet and shoes got wet from the dew - not a big deal to sew, as I also sew without shoes- but the the floor in the Sloan Center got kinda messy from our shoes. I'm bringing another pair to use to walk outside to avoid this. I still need easy slip on for the airport.
