Any long time posters (Dale, Jo, Lynda, etc) still around?

Hey guys-- Notice I didn't say "old" time but "long" time! Life has been crazy as some of you know. (Thanks again Dale for your supportive advice.) Things have turned out really well! My whole family spent the summer together camping. My husband took an early retirement and was able to work in the campground with me! My daughter is now old enough that she also worked in the campground. We had a good time and it was really nice for the family! Sometimes I felt we were a little cramped for space but then again we spent just about all of our time outside so it wasn't so bad!

Did a lot of boating, swimming, paddling, hiking, etc. Since our whole family was there this summer we brought all three dogs! Now that was fun! So fun I'll never do it again! Two dogs slept in the pop up and one dog out in the tent with the girls! By the end of the summer my big baby of a dog discovered he liked sleeping in my bed! So, in addition to my snoring husband I had a huge snoring dog in my bed also! He never goes in my bed at home and I didn't have the heart to kick him out! He gets away with it in a tent because he just sneaks up on the end of my sleeping bag! The nice thing about having the dogs was that every morning I started the day with a 2 mile walk/hike through paths and a logging road. It was great exercise for all of us and left the dogs nice and mellowed out for the day!

So, how is everybody doing? Dale, have you done any great fishing? Jo, any great hikes? Lynda, how was your summer camping home? Anybody else? I know I read Rusty's post and some others earlier so I'm not forgetting him, brian, or tp!

I guess you noticed I also used the term "long time" as opposed to that other phrase in my last post. That thought actually did cross my mind. We DO have to be kind to our brethren, don't we?

This past season was relatively quiet. I was only able to do a couple of weekend trips. One was a freezing scout adventure in Jersey and the other was up at Lake George(not cheap but great fishing). My 10y.o. son is now expressing his yearning to go camping more often which will make planning future trips that much more inviting for the rest of the family.

Dale, Brian, Jo, Rusty, TP, Elliott, Hippy and everyone else I'm forgetting. It has been a long time for sure. I have been working some long hours and rarely come on. Jen, your story sounded pretty scary for you and your dgt.(the dogs too)
Our dog had cancer and has had 2 surgeries since Feb. she is doing well and hopefully they got it all the second time. She just turned 4 and that was a very happy surprising birthday for us. I still spend every weekend at the campground and any days off in between. We are looking into buying a newer trailer in the spring. Wow Jen, you are lucky to have your hubby retire so young. Keep him busy...LOL
I was laid up for a week last month, someone decided to ram into me on the pike doing around 40-45 and not even slowing down. My car was totaled and that stinks. I don't remember much except the feel of the impact and then i blacked out for a while it seems, the ride to the hospital is still a blur. I am so thankful though that I am ok and realize how much worse it could have been. We will be going to the campground right through the winter as usual, this is the best time, no one is there and it is so peaceful. Take care everyone and I'll ck. in more often. Hi Carol - This is my first year with WS flowers (or WS anything). Last year was the first year for flowers. Maybe I better double check what I have in my profile not that another year's gone by. :) As for fertilizing, it's rare that we fertilize any of the containers. The compost is so rich that I honestly can't recall us fertilizing anything. Of course, each year we use fresh compost in the containers. We don't even top dress with fresh compost during the growing season or need to use compost tea. We do hand water everything using watering cans - so the container plants always have enough water but they don't have excess that would leach the nutrients out and wash then away. Summers have been so dry that mother nature hasn't washed out nutrients either. If she does give us a rainy year we might need to top dress the containers with additional compost. Five gallon bucket is FANTASTIC for growing all of these. But keep in mind hubby comes from a family that did a lot of container growing and he can grow tomatoes in gallon pots without much problem. We did start with gallons, then went to two gallons, but then we found a source for free five gallon buckets. The biggest thing is that containers dry out fast - but then again so does our ground when we're in drought conditions. With gallon pots there were some days that we'd have to water tomatoes morning and again in the evening. With the five gallon pots, in a drought year we need to water daily during the hottest time, less if we get clouds or cooler weather. We tend to spend a lot of time toodling around the yard carrying watering cans. (And we could spray water - but water here is pricey and hand watering puts the water exactly where we want it in the right amounts. It also keeps us looking at every single plant almost every day so we can give each one proper care.) Then link below goes to all of my photos with the word "buckets" in them. You can see happy tomato, squash, cucumber, grape, bean and gourd plants. Flowers are all in garden beds in soil that just would not cooperate nicely with vegetable growing. My garden currently favors flowers that like lean, dry soil but it should get richer as it gets each year's compost. There's a bunch of photos of last year's flowers up there too. Hi Terrene - Nice to hear from you! Sorry to hear that you've got neighbors too close for comfort. Our new location is actually closer to a few people than the old place was - but decent neighbors make a big difference. Our new ones have a big garden on our landlord's farmland and immediately encouraged us to help ourselves to tomatoes. Then they brought over home raised eggs. Tonight for dinner we had potatoes from their garden. When they saw us moving plants in containers, they tilled up a few rows in their garden and gave me a place to move flowers. The change has been so positive that I actually placed a big Swallowtail Seeds order tonight. The garden at the old place is solid with mature, low hassle perennials and I moved a selection of favorites. This wintersow, though, I'm going to sow some annuals again! I've got space for them around the edges of the new garden, and expect to have the time and peaceful gardening environment to keep the most vigorous perennials pruned and the less burly annuals from being bullied. I'm looking forward to being able to go nuts harvesting seed from next year's flowers - and already got a little head start on that harvesting seed off the neighbor's marigolds.It sure feels good to be optimistic about growing plants again! (!!!) Hopefully when you do your big move, I'll be able to help set you up with a goodie box of plant divisions or seeds.

Hi Vesters. So many things you wrote struck a chord with me as we experienced the same issues with my SD, who is now 14. We've had custody of her since she was 5, after gaining emergency and then full custody though a very nasty battle. After DH and his ex divorced SM moved SD hours away. SD began sleeping in her bed, showering with her, being completely dependent on her mom. BM thrived on this - it made her feel needed and important. SD couldn't (or wouldn't) do or try anything on her own. SD became BM's 'bff' and confidant - all at the mature age of 3. This continued until BM found a boyfriend, and then SD was kicked into her own bed in her own room on a different floor and told to go to sleep. Once that relationship ended SD was needed again and back in BM's bed, all the while hearing about BM's relationship woes. Fast forward a few years. We have custody, SD sees her mom EOW. She's still trying to have SD sleep with her (between boyfriends) and be dependent on her. The 'bff' behavior is worsening and we're hearing all about BM's love life from SD. SD is getting stomach aches right before visitations and worrying about how to take care of her mom. All so appropriate for a mother/daughter relationship. And then there was. . . "BM also used to say things to SD (right after I came on the scene) like, "I'd never let a man come between us" and "You're the only one I need" which sounds innocent enough, but it was very much meant as a "look at your father, moving on with his life, I'll never let that happen to us." I could have written that. BM is always saying this. . . in between the men in her life. But what SD figured out about 2 years ago is that her mom is full of sh@t. She started to see all these behaviors factored around her mom and what her mom needed on her mom's schedule. She was blinded by the 'my mom needs me' and 'my mom loves me best' until then, but with the help of her counselor and a little maturity she started to figure it out. I won't say she doesn't fall back into buying her mom's crud every now and again, but for the main part she can she the behavior for who it is really about - mom, not SD. I tell you all this so you know you are not alone, and also to give you hope. Your SD needs help, and she needs her dad to help her receive it, but she can recover from this. I will tell you one thing SD's counselor shared with us that was helpful for SD and for our tongues as we weren't biting them so hard. When you say "I'm always a little uncomfortable when she talks so openly about her BM with me (because I know the "real deal"), yet I'm always very careful to make sure I speak loving and positively about her ." you need to stop. This doesn't mean speak negatively, but you don't have to put a good spin on bad actions. Don't try to make mom's bad action ok. Don't make excuses for her. Listen to SD, let her know you understand why she would be upset, help her with generalized, non leading questions discover why she's upset, but don't then tell her it's all ok and mommy knows best. Later, when she figures out mommy doesn't, you will be seen as a liar. It's ok to say sometimes mommy's get confused, or mommy's make mistakes. This is likely better pronounced by DH at first, but you need to know that you don't have to be positive. Just don't be negative, if you get what I mean. :-) Good luck. Keep us updated, and keep your chin up. You are doing the right thing.

OMG, I wanted to take the little blonde ones home! When you post your newbies, add Cabbage Patch too? I've been meaning to ask you how it's doing? Mine seemed "tame" last year. Yours? -BC, I said Hi to Glenn for you and he had a big grin on his face when he realized who it was I was referring to. Such a friendly and likeable fellow. :). I asked how he fertilizes and it's all granular, time release little green bb's! -Jerry, yes, ecstatic is a good description...about everything! I'm not sure how many he actually dug up for me (I was all over and everywhere) but it is standard practice for them to be potted up in new pots, and filled with a freshly mixed, lovely fluffy mixture that resembles my own! Mini Skirt was dug right up from a growing bed! I was very lucky to get it that day. Lets talk budget then, lol! I took a set amount in cash (more than I needed) and when my order was rung through, which included 4 more hostas than my list, I still had $ left over. i laughingly said, "I can't go home with this money, I brought it to buy hostas so... I need to get more hostas!" Two more hostas, a bit of fertilizer and I was efficiently shopped out, Lol - my job was done! So....Attach a box like Paula and her husband had, got on that bike, and head on over to Glenn's! There are many gorgeous hostas waiting for you! -NHL, thank you for that and yes, I'll be posting progress pics for sure. Golden Gate will get brighter, Beet Salad beefier, Jujen will finish unfurling as will its Mama .. and the list goes on... -Dave, Mickfields is enormous! Almost too large an assembly? it gives a totally different vibe, doesn't it? We have one or two that are huge, full nurseries (trees/shrubs/vines/perennials of all sorts) but have gone overboard, IMO on all kinds of extraneous non-gardening doo-dads, including clothing! and don't specialize in hostas but at least offer a broad enough selection. I prefer the home-based or family-run businesses/nurseries for the personal approach and display gardens. We need more like them. The hosta business has been booming for many years in North America. I don't think it will ever "go out of style". Regardless of what some say, the hosta business is a cash cow...but you have to love hostas a lot not to mind all the countless hours of work.

Wow! Lynda, I'm glad you're okay! People are crazy on those roads! It was not so lucky about the retirement because it was due to health reasons but it's all good now! I do enjoy having him around a lot more and feel like he is a real part of the family! But, there are a lot more work options out there and we have started a business! If you ever need to polygraph anybody let me know!

Hi Elliot! I actually didn't read your post where you used that term until after I wrote mine! Maybe it's that I'm getting to an age where I know my kids think I'm ancient! Where was your NJ trip? There are a lot of scout trips at Parvin State Park. I finally got my 9 yo daughter to move into her own tent this summer! Her end of the pop up became a "family room" for games, hanging out, etc. She has slept in it for years but was kept trashing it! I told her I would make her move into the tent with her sister if she kept it up! When it happened she actually enjoyed it even though she's the one that resisted the idea for years! So, she stayed out in the tent all summer!

Afternoon Jen,

That scout camp was at Alpine,NJ. Not bad sites decent size but they were quite a trek from the parking lots. What one lacked in distance to the sites was made up in elevation. When I packed, I packed as if it was "van within 50 feet" camping. Not within 2050 feet camping. Luckily, I brought a Little Tikes wagon but was repositioning the cargo constantly. Unfortunately, it was very uncomfortable during the seminars and show and tell sessions the camp was providing and the kids couldn't wait to leave. I waited as long as possible for the weather to break but it never did. With my 10y.o. clinging and telling me that everyone else was leaving, I had no choice. Packing up after the rain, sleet, snow, and hail in 32Â° temps was a real trip. I ended up putting my numerous ice ridden mounds of nylon in large storage containers I happen to bring. I've never partaken in winter camping before. With forewarned exposure, it would be different experience when prepared. Thankfully, my son had mentioned he still enjoys camping and we went again as soon as possible to get right back on that horse. I, myself, can't wait till the next outdoor excusion. Maybe in April or May this year cause next year, when he's a "boy" scout, it could be any time during the calendar. I think I have a few purchases to make before then.

Hey Elliot, not even sure where that is! Given the name is Alpine I'm willing to guess it's nowhere near here-- it is totally flat here! There are no hills and no rocks--nothing alpine at all! Winter camping like that dosn't sound fun at all! The scouts around here are often at the local state park.

Anybody here anything from Dale???

Morning Jen,

Hope your holidays were enjoyable. Just one more weekend to go then I could go back to normal eating.

Alpine is about 6-8 miles north of Fort Lee. Just across the river from Yonkers, NY. Couldn't be much flatter than that. Maybe the name "Alpine" is just an attractant. Very convenient for city dwellers. I'd rather be in the "real mountains during future excursions.

To all: Well, here i sit, in the clutches of the bowel demon! Was affected by it on Wednesday evening-haven't had much to eat except noodle soup and crackers since! That thing gave me terrific pains in my legs! So bad, i finally took some Tylenol-calmed them down a bit! Today, i went outside in the warm sunshine and walked around a bit. Feeling much better today, too. Weather here is sunny and warm, temp. around 45 +, lawn moles active, grass greening up, leaves all blown away. No New Years Day sauerkraut for me, though!! Unh-Unh-don't want risk a repeat of the past few days!!
Hope everybody else is o.k. Soon be time to go camping, won't it? Oh, yeah, there are some winter campers out there, but its not my bag! Although on the 12/13 of Jan. is the annual Ice Jam Bluegrass deal in Butler, PA., and we'll all camp in at the Butler Days Inn for the weekend! Lots of pickin' and grinnin', check up on friends, listen to some great bands, might get a chance on stage, but we'll all have fun!
So, finish out the winter in good health, and have a great new year!

Hello, Jen and everyone! It has been a while since I have been on the site. Glad everyone's still here (wondering about Dale though). Jen, that was funny about the snoring husband and dog!

2006 was a tough year for me. I lost five relatives last year. Two brothers, an uncle, a great uncle and my mother-in-law passed away. I have hopes that 2007 will be much happier.

I have not hiked much in a while. I do go down to the Ninety Six Historical Site where they have several trails. It's close to home so I can get there pretty fast.

Anyway, it's good to be back and I hope to post at lot more!

Hi Jo! Great to hear from you! I am so sorry you had such a rough year. I guess it was tough on a lot of us. This has got to be a better year. Maybe I'll dig up Dale's e-mail and drop him a line! He seems to be the only one that hasn't checked in! Hopefully, a lot of good hikes are in store for you this year!

Rusty, sorry to hear you were hit by a bowel demon-- love that description by the way-- hope you are feeling better! Enjoy the bluegrass event!

Jen: Thanks for your good wishes! They helped a lot! I'm all cured!
Went to the bluegrass festival, and had a great time. Was up until 3 a.m. Friday night/ Sat. morning, pickin the 5 string banjo! Finally got to bed around 4, got up for brunch at 11 a.m.! Then on Sat. night, sat up with friends, playing the banjo, and playing everything we knew! Dropped in on some other musician friends, for an hour or so of more music! (Most everybody else had toddled off to bed, but this old (82) horse just had to stay up!)
Finally found my room at 4 a.m., then had to check out at eleven a.m.
I live about 30 miles from the motel, but too far to drive back home, especially if it snows very much, or i have swallowed a beer or two!
Wife Ruth doesn't go with me--she likes her nice cozy bed, and doesn't have to put up with a woozy old fool wandering in at 3 a.m., waking her out of a sound sleep!
Had a great time, the bowel demons left me alone, and i made it back home in fine condition!
