thanks, folks. in cat's photo, I can see how that little spot on its throat is the beginning of that full ruby gorget. cool. there is another one hanging around, too, smaller with a clean grey throat. just this morning I was thinking its beak looked huge, catwhiskas. these 2 chase each other and play and wait for each other to feed. I'll try to get some more pics of them. I actually saw one of them on the hummzinger saucer feeder today. that was a 'first' this year.

The only thing with Crossley's Raptor guide is that, for relative beginners, it's photograph overload. Turn to any particular page and one could quickly feel overwhelmed by intricate plumage differences that ultimately jumble together to form one big complex hawk in your memory. Kind of like a library without a card catalog. There's very little you can do other than commit some field marks, flight styles, and behavior to memory. Or, just get good pictures and ask me. :-) Although there are times I have trouble IDing a hawk myself. Depends on how good of a look I can get. I think what else may be helpful is to always know what you might be likely to see in your area. In CT, your Red-taileds are going to be easterns. They pretty much all look the same. You probably have many year-round Red-tailed residents and the guy you photographed up there probably has a mate on a nest right now. A nesting (adult) pair of Red-taileds have the rufous tails. A juvenile (last year's brood) bird will lack a rufous tail and will show brown and white tail bands instead. A clean, lightly marked underside is more indicative of an adult- juvies have more brown markings and look streaky underneath. Some adults are heavily marked too though! Adult Red-taileds will also show a thin dark rim around the back of the underwing. You can see that on the bird you photographed. I recommend Dunne/Sibley/Sutton 'Hawks in Flight, 2nd Edition'. I have to say that I bought the Crossley guide for pleasure rather than purpose. I love the photos! But when I first sat down with it, I could already score very high on the "quizzes" he embedded within it. So, I learned my skills elsewhere. Hawks in Flight was a huge help with that.

This little munchkin barely looks old enough to have left the nest doesn't it? I don't know what it is. I, along with about 25 others, were asked to identify this photo on Facebook. The original poster said it was a juvie warbler and they were asking for everyone's assistance in making a positive ID. We got a few BT Blues and a few Myrtles as responses, but still no one is absolutely sure. They don't call them "confusing fall" (or juvie) warblers for nothin.

Hi Lisa, I really know nothing about bird illness. The only thing I could think of was the relatively sudden change of air temperature (it's been the same here in Massachusetts - unseasonably COLD - but I bet it's even colder where you are). I did read that sudden changes in air temperature can affect birds' energy levels (a study done in Scotland). But I don't know whether the way your bird looks could be explained by something like that. Our birds here are still pretty lively and doing the usual things. Is the bird eating or drinking? Is it losing feathers? I wish that I could be more helpful. Would the Cornell Lab of Ornithology site have information? They seem to be a good place to refer to. Best of luck, I know you care so much about the birds.

What kind of lens are you using (you know us amateur photographers, we think one more piece of equipment and we'll start taking perfect pictures)?

Thanks everybody,

We're lucky to have many nice yardbirds here, and love to see all the sweet fledglings each Spring. Sharing with our friends online only increases our joy of them. :)

cj - We shoot with 2 Canon Sx-IS cameras, an S3 and an S5. We attach a Sony 1.7x teleconverter to either as needed for longer shots.

And btw, we shot a really cute series of that same sweet Titmouse juvi seen at the beginning of this post yesterday.

Adorable Kenn! I LOVE that Titmouse, we don't get them around here.

Hey Camera question now. I dropped my S2IS from the windowsill onto the floor for the 2nd time, bad I know but this time it didn't fare as well as the first time. I have a seam that has opened up a bit but it still works. I am just worried that if I get moisture in there at all it will be done for. I was planning on getting the teleconverter you have for my S2 but since I broke it I was thinking of getting a used S3 or S5 since the new superzooms that are out just don't seem to cut it for me. I tried the SX10 IS and returned it, would love to try the SX1 IS though but it is a little more pricey. Anyway in looking over the S3 and S5 it seems the S5 is much slower on the continous picture mode than the S3 or S2 are, do you find that the case? That is the main reason I returned the SX10 cause of the slow continous pic mode since I use that so often. Do you notice any advances that the S5 has over the S3. I do like the gridline thing for landscapes but don't have to have it. Thanks for any input you can give me.

Titmice are sure delightful little birds. We're delighted to have them here. :)

Donna - We've been very happy with our Sx-IS cameras. They are nearly identical in operation and both take very good photos in good light. The S5 is slower in HContinuous shooting because it's saving 8mp files, whereas the S3 is 6mp. But they use the same size sensor and have the same lens system, etc. It's hard to see significant differences in image quality. The S5's view finder is brighter, which sometimes helps to see clearly in low light. But I find this makes judging exposure a bit more difficult sometimes also.
If you can find either model in good condition (ebay perhaps?), we would not hesitate to recommend them.

That's why I love Canon's...rugged build cameras, my Rebel fell down one's on a trip in Switzerland, ...it didn't seem to mind.

My little Canon Powershot S2 IS survived a serious horse cart crash that put me in the hospital. That's why, when I upgraded to a DSLR, I bought a Canon EOS

Yep, I totally agree about the Canons, they are built tough. My S2 dropped about 4 ft to the linoleum, second time is when it broke, first time was about a year ago. It just hit wrong this time I guess but at least it is still working, other than the gap in the seam it is fine. My mom has a Panasonic FZ28, if hers were to drop like mine did it would be in pieces as it is almost all plastic. I would really love the Rebel but can't swing that price yet.
