juvie or female? pics

these are the first pics that I've been able to get this year of a ruby-throated hummingbird that is not an adult male. do you think it's a 2005 model?

Thanks for the info Fighting8r. I have noticed the same about the gsts being focused on "getting out" and nothing else, lol, I have yet to see one nectar on the lantana that I put in the reptarium when I have to keep them in a while depending on when they eclose, I don't think I have had to keep one over 24 hrs yet though, or not much longer than that anyway. You are so right about this forum slowing down, lol, this is my first "season" raising caterpillars, and I think those last cats I found were late babies, so to speak, I haven't seen anymore eggs since I found those cats. I wonder do the females that are released late still lay eggs even at this time of year? Hopefuly if they do, they won't lay them in my yard, hehe, I am hoping that I will be done when these last two cats I have pupate. Hopefully they will do so before I leave for Miami, in less than two weeks, or I will have to find a "sitter" for them. Sadly, I did lose two last instar cats this weekend, still clueless as to what happened to them, one of them was about 6 wks old, but he appeared to be perfectly healthy, I was shocked when I saw something was wrong because he was doing so well. Totally unexpected! And the other one that died, had already purged and began process of preparing to pupate, he either fell out of his sling or did not make a sling, and flipped upside down, eventually he got detached from the silk pad anchoring his lower body, he laid on his side and moved around for a while, and he was still in j looking form, and had even shrunk so that his body looked really segmented, if that makes sense, but he never pupated, I guess sometimes, nature steps in and takes its course, no matter what you do, who knows.

Wow. That's cool! I guess all the juvie males are getting their spots now so we can differentiate a bit better. I read that they usually get the rest of their gorget feathers during the winter in their summer homes. Hope all these little guys remember us next year. I have yet to see a mature male.

I wonder if these guys are my female's children??? :-p What is also cool that I forgot to mention is that when I got home, I took down, cleaned, and refilled the feeder. And when I went back out to hang it, there was a hummer hovering in the empty spot where the feeder had been hanging, pecking at the home-made ant moat (which I had made from a red plastic Maxwell House coffee jar lid)! LOL It was like "Hey!!!! What happened here? Where's my FOOD???!!!" As I approached, it backed up to let me reconnect the feeder and flew to the side while I straightened it. Then it finally returned about a minute later. Also last evening was the very first time that I heard my hummers chirp! Wow!!!!! All summer has been silence... Not even any sound from the wings. Now I was hearing all sorts of racket... not too dissimilar from sparrow chirps but shorter and more abrupt in duration. One other interesting observation is that for all the years that I have lived here, I always had spider webs - many quite large and intricate, with huge spirals attached from the balcony ceiling to the balcony rail or to the tops of my overhanging shrubs along the rail (a distance ranging from about 3ft - 4ft in diameter). But for the first time ever, not this year... Not a spider web to be seen. And of course I know why! ;-). Here's another pic from last evening... looking for an "incoming"! LOL

LOL! Cute...2005 model...lol! He's such a beauty!

I miss my male juvie - I think I've got a female who's been chasing him off lately (she's dubbed the feeders her's now). He was so inquisitive - he'd fly up to the window where I would be sitting and just look at me and then fly off. I love juveniles!

Cat - that's a beautiful pic of a 2004 model! What a neat pose. BTW, i love all your comments on your posts about that bad ol red nectar, lol!

thanks, folks. in cat's photo, I can see how that little spot on its throat is the beginning of that full ruby gorget. cool.
there is another one hanging around, too, smaller with a clean grey throat. just this morning I was thinking its beak looked huge, catwhiskas. these 2 chase each other and play and wait for each other to feed. I'll try to get some more pics of them.
I actually saw one of them on the hummzinger saucer feeder today. that was a 'first' this year.

here's the other one. thought I'd never get a pic, because an adult male 'owns' this feeder and divebombs this little one most every time.

now tilt your head up, so we can get a look at your throat.

Love your pictures. I have my hummzinger hung by my perky pet feeder. Once in a while they will use the hummzinger if the perky pet is taken.
