Hi Every one,

I attended a local Bluebird society meeting here in S.California.I was surprised to hear from them that here in CA,they hang their nest boxes on tree branches 20ft+ from the ground using a pole.They seem to have great success.Their philosophy here is that the Bluebird's real enemy is not the racoon/snake/cat/squirrel etc.Humans are the BB's biggest enemy.Here they may not have too many racoons.The whole idea is very hard for me.I suppose I can get used to it.Each time you monitor a nest box, you have to use this pole,bring down the nest box,check it and then lift it up in a pole to hang it back on the tree!!!"Different strokes for different folks" is correct.Who is to say that they are wrong?Their success rate is impressive.

Hi michelle, This is very interesting. I know lost of habitat,using pesticides and the import of house sparrows and starlings are due to humans. For the life of me I can't see how hanging a Bluebird nest box 20ft high in a tree will protect it from humans other than it being out of reach. What in the world are people doing to the BB nest boxes that are within reach? Please explain!

Here in the SE we have snakes and have to use baffles. Believe me I learned this the hard way just this past summer.

I do agree that since they are having success then who am I to knock it. I would find it awkward using a 20ft+ pole to monitor a nest box. Knowing me I would drop the box!

Also, maybe the needs of the Eastern Bluebird are different from the Mountain and Western Bluebirds.

I agree with you 100%.I am so worried that I will drop the nest box.I can't even get a drinking glass down from my kitchen cabinet without dropping it.I am not sure that I want to volunteer to monitor any trails here yet.According to the president of the local group,people out of curiosity go into the nest boxes if they are within reach and vandalize it.Also, the needs of the mountain BBs may be different.One of the group members showed me how to use the pole.It takes a lot of dextirity;also you need an SUV or a wagon type car to be able to carry this long pole.

Well, you could always use the very tacky but effective way of anchoring things in a waveless body of water- fill up old (well-cleaned) clorox bottles with concrete, let them cure, and securely tie boating rope to the handles. Sink the bottles and float the box from the rope. Ugly but that's how I've seen it done with rowboats, etc. in shallow water. Cinder blocks work equally well. Sorry, not the most aesthetically pleasing option, but it works.

The three eggs are still there, and mom and dad have been busy at work. They're eating up the dried mealworms, too. I haven't seen any house wrens, but I'm not great at picking them out, either. I just went to my Sibley book, and it says that they are at edges of woods and overgrown gardens, we really don't fit that bill. No woods, and not much of a garden. This neighborhood was corn fields until 2006 and they scraped off all of the good soil and left the clay. Two neighborhoods side by side, same outcome. Any trees here are under 7 years old. I've put in bushes in the last 2 years, all are still quite small. I do have a carolina wren that nests every year in the propane tank, about 15 feet from the bluebird feeder. I've left that nest alone, but found it on the ground after the propane guy came about a month ago. I don't know if the wren will rebuild or not, I hope so. That's a funny bird, when we sit on the back porch it'll jump around the porch just out of eyesight and peek over to look at us as it goes around. Like it thinks we don't see it!! Would a carolina wren disturb it? My daughter just started taking lessons at that horse farm, I was actually shocked when I heard and then saw those HOSP. They were only there that one time, but they were there. We are quite rural, and close to the bay with a lot of swamp around. I never feed birdseed beyond the winter time and it is always BOSS or safflower seeds, never millet and that filler crap that those HOSP seem to love. I really hope I never see one of those here!! I have a killdeer nesting somewhere way in the backyard, I haven't gotten too close, I got a warning last time I walked back there, and my purple martins are back, too :) Each of the plots in the neighborhood are an acre, and it is only about 40% built, the builders left after the market crashed. Hi Pam and anyone else interested, After my last posting, we had a very high wind come up for about an hour. It blew some branches and clumps of leaves down all around our area, but no rain. It also blew down a large piece of wood that may have frightened the baby, but for whatever reason, the little bird went back under the fence to outside of our yard, and the parents seemed to keep him there this time. In fact, he quite moved on from being squenched up next to the fence, and I could not see him any more with a quick check, but I did hear him answering his mother, and the parents kept coming back and were in different trees to watch after him. They were actually in the trees they perched in to watch their original bluebird home, about 10 feet closer to the front of the house than they had been through this ordeal in our fenced back yard. This morning when I got up, the bluebird parents were not there nor was he. The parents did come back a couple of times when I was outside and did not seem distressed. They did not seem to be calling to him at all. I didn't hear them sing or call any at all. The trees they were sitting in as I mentioned before were closer to the front of my yard and I cannot see the birds from my back deck with binoculars like I could when they were looking after him in the shed. I didn't want to stay too close to see and frighten him into running again, so I missed seeing if they were going down and feeding him, if they had encouraged him to fly and if he did, or anything at all. All I know is that by about 10:00 a.m. when I went around to sit on my little concrete bench which is about 15 feet from the bluebird house, the mom and dad sat in the tree there where they always looked after their home like they were communing with me. Lol. I did hear what I know was some kind of baby bird high in the trees in my neighbor's yard right next to this area. Since I have not heard a baby bird calling from that area throughout this weekend, I'm just going to believe that it was him and that he was able to fly and get up there with his parents calling him at some time that I didn't see. He could almost fly the day before, so I'm hoping that they get him moved down the block to the little field where they moved and where his siblings are. I hope they bring all their babies back to see me some day the way another bluebird family did a couple of years ago. I'll try to let you know if I see all 5 of the babies some time, but there are lots of bluebirds around here, so it may be hard to tell. Sorry Tom, I posted w/o ever reading your post. I wasn't riveted on what you had to say. You offer a perspective that I had not considered when posting and that is cutting with nails, etc. in the tree. We once had to cut a tree where somebody had had the great idea to fill a hole with concrete to slow down rotting (I guess) and when it was our time to cut, it ruined DHs saw, some concrete debris hit his face and removing the big chunk of concrete was a big chore. Sounds like you might have been in the lumber biz or in a situation dealing with trees/lumber freq. I am not. In my area, residential trees are (unfortunately) rarely used for lumber and typically go to a burn pile or hauled away. In a residential case like that, there is far less danger than in the situations you describe but yes, danger nonetheless, I don't argue about trees, I was simply posting what I do, and what has worked for me. In the cases where my action turns out to be monumental mistakes, I am never too proud to post accordingly, assuming the tree didn't fall on me...

I find it most sad that people will disturb a Bluebird nest box. What is our world coming to?

Do you have Bluebirds that nest in your yard/garden? At least you could control the unwanted 2 legged activity there. I couldn't manage a 20+ft pole even if I had a SUV or wagon type of car. I am in the mid 50's. Maybe I could have done that 30 yrs ago with ease.:-)

Michelle and Jean, I think what you're describing is a nestbox/hanging system that is used by Linda Violet. She reports great success with western bluebirds with this system and claims that boxes installed in this manner at not as targeted by house sparrows. I have doubts that such a system would work in my area, however, both because of climbing predators and because of the dreaded house wrens. I think, also, that house sparrow behavior may differ in different parts of the country.
I, too, would worry about handling a nestbox in this manner. Bluebird eggs and young are very fragile and I would be nervous about the possibility of them being harmed during the lowering/lifting process. Unfortunately, vandalism is an issue in many places and if this system works for those using it, I'm all for it.

So where are they getting these 20 foot poles, I can't imagine even handling a 20 foot pole.

They get it from places that sell pool cleaning supplies.I was the only one in the group that seemed to feel that this method was too cumbersome.It is a significant investment in time.In the time that I would need to take down and hang up 4 boxes, I could do 12 boxes in my school trail in OH.I am NOT sure that I want to do any nest box checks in CA.I would be afraid that I would drop it and ruin it for the innocent Blues.

Michelle: where in California are you?? I'm 12 miles inland from Malibu and have never heard nor seen such a set-up. I have 7 nestboxes on my property for many many years - all on 6 foot poles with predator baffles. I can't imagine hanging a nestbox from a tree and letting the rats, squirrels, raccoons, cats, etc. climb the tree to reach it. I'll be curious to find out what part of California you live in.

I can see hanging boxes in a park, up and above where people can reach, that way they won't get stolen or messed with by unseedy characters. I've seen one park that had many blue bird boxes but they were really crude, either made out of PVC or tin cans, I'm not sure. My gut feelings is that originally their was good wooden boxes but they disappeared.

I live in Costa Mesa.It is in Southern Orange County.It is surrounded by Lagoona Hills,Newport beach etc.Linda Violett was at this meeting and every one there was very comfortable with this method.They have been using this method for a long time with good results.

I've been testing some of Linda Violett's boxes here in CT. They are VERY well made, but also quite heavy. Her hanger is pretty nifty. I would NOT use it in an area like LA where climbing snakes are a big problem. When single holed boxes were not available, I got bluebirds nesting in one. When single holed boxes were available the next season, I just got a nuthatch nseting (which was VERRRRRRRRRRRY cool.)

I wonder how these bluebirders are doing with all the fires in CA, including Yorba Linda, not to mention all the wildlife.

The poles we use in Southern California are expandable 8-foot pool poles with a form of basket attached with a swivel made from PVC. They are much smaller than the ones used by Linda Violett since we primarily use a smaller singe-hole nestbox. Check out the SCBC website at socalbluebirds.org. Bob Franz
