What's up with my blues ???

Hi.......For the past 3 days my blues haven't been to my yard at all... : ( ...they were coming 2 to 3 times a day to eat mealies and enjoy the birdbath.....i hear them every morning and late afternoon but never see them anymore......they aren't getting ready to leave me are they?....the weather has gotten much cooler now so i expected them to hang out more around here. Bren,
My information is that Blues need more than just mealworms.They have to suppliment with other bugs.If there has been a sudden drop in temperature, they will often migrate to warmer areas for alteat parts of the day where bugs are available or other foods such as berries.

Bren...a couple of weeks ago, I had several males and one female checking out the box. Since then, one couple has been at the nestbox just twice, as far as I know, and it's been at least a week since I saw them there. I can see them in the trees, usually in the mornings. From what I understand, this behavior is quite normal and I'm sure your blues will return. Guess they are doing their own thing, and as Michelle said, supplimenting their diet with bugs and such.

Those precious blues just don't know how much they disappoint us with their disappearing acts!!!! I think of them as "my" blues and I would be sooooo upset if I thought they were scouting out real estate elsewhere! LOL!

"I called an HVAC friend, and he told me to open the door, hold the switch manually, and see if that works. That time the system turned on and stayed on perfectly fine. He said it sounds like there is something that's restricting air flow and a limiter switch is engaging to prevent overheating..." I think your HVAC friend has a good lead as to what to investigate. Perhaps the door was originally not seated properly and was allowing just enough air so the limit switch did not trip. But when you took the door off and closed it again, you may have made a tighter seal and that little bit of air is no longer reaching the burner. It is an old furnace so anything is possible.

My house is fairly dry in winter and I don't have these problems. Can you describe the mix you use? Soil is one of those things that every grower tweaks over years to get the perfect mix that works for your environment, your watering habits, heat/humidity, etc. I use only coir and perlite, and for me and my environment and watering habits, it's perfect. For someone who lives in AZ where it's dry and hot, it would surly mean death to their plants. For someone with a heavy hand in watering, it wouldn't be loose enough. Some people add orchid bark to basically what I use. I find that makes the mix too loose and forces me to water more than is my habit. How long have you been growing Hoyas? If for several years, I'd guess you are right and it's probably the weird year you're experiencing, and there's probably little you can do about it. I don't know what kind of winters you have there, but ours are very harsh and I inevitably have a few casualties. But most of my Hoyas come through with flying colors. And I grow a lot of succulents as well... I don't have much trouble with them in winter, either, as long as I'm careful not to over-water. Denise in Omaha

My guess is that it is not the fault of the installer, but inherent, minor flaws from the manufacturing process. I'm not sure that those issues are big enough you can expect the installer to have not used the tiles. I will say that there is one other issue: I see grout in the corner. This will crack over time. The industry standard is to use color-matched silicone caulk at changes of plane like this.

Thanks Michelle & Donna.....They're still not coming around but i still hear them and very close sometimes....i guess thats a good thing....at least they havent left the area.

You're so right about them disappointing us Donna....i sit out there for hours on end waiting for them to come back...hubby actually makes fun of me asking me if i'm gonna cry over it.......lol....its just so weird that they pulled a disappearing act after staying here so much eating and fighting over the boxes then poof....they were gone !!!!...oh well......i'll wait as long as i have to....

i'm still keeping meal worms out there....should i stop this until i see them again?.... Bren
