Trying to ID A Bird by It's Song

I was sitting up at my desk and happened to catch an unusual sounding bird's song. I am not sure what kind of bird this might be. I was able to record the bird's song on my iPhone Memo, and converted it to an mp3 file. Is there somewhere I can upload that file to, and see if someone could listen to it and help me to identify what bird this might be? I'm in N. San Diego county near the coast, and have tons and tons of birds in my yard due to large numbers of California native plants, as well as many feeders, nesting places, etc. Doubt it would be a migrating bird at this time if year, but could be. I can send the file to anyone who's got a good ear for bird calls. You'll have to turn up the volume and wear ear buds or a headset, since the recording is faint (second story window). Thanks!

I did have a Chipper nest of 3 Chippers and one Cowbird.....didn't notice till it was too late. All 4 babies fledged. I did notice that more Chippers than just the 2 parents were feeding these babies. Quite a few in fact. SO (not that I like these birds) but it does not necessarily mean all the other nestlings died.

Any good bird identification book will tell you what a particular bird eats. As for websites, I like Cornell Lab of Ornithology (link below). Figure out which birds you'd most like to attract that are in your area at certain times of year. Finches will be attracted to your nyjer seed sock. In the winter, you may get Pine Siskins attracted to that same sock. In an irruption year, you may even get a flock of Common Redpolls in the winter. In winter I like to feed a good homemade suet. It attracts a lot of birds, but mostly I get to see woodpeckers and Bluebirds. I also keep a feeder with Black Oil Sunflower seed (summer and winter) which mostly attracts Tuffed Titmice, White Breasted Nuthatches, House Finches, Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks, and Black-Capped Chickadees. Another thing that will really bring them in during the winter months is a heated bird bath. I never feed the mixes. Most contain corn and millet which attract House Sparrows (a non-native species that I try to discourage). Glad you figured it out! Red eyed vireos are some of the birds who seem to talk constantly. If you have one around, you'll hear it so often, you'll never forget it. :)

Okay, I have solve the mystery. When I pulled into the garage today, after going to the gym, as I got out of the car, I could hear this "mystery" bird singing his 2-3 note song, again. I stepped back and saw one of our many lovely male Hooded Orioles perched up at the very top of one of my Italian Cypresses that are just around the corner from my 2nd story office window. So, it's a Hooded Oriole! We have many nesting in our yard, and in our neighbor's yard due to the large number of Queen palms and fan palms we have. They love to weave their nests in the fronds.

Like all orioles, they are very loud :-) The first time I ever saw one, I was living in N. Indiana. We had a very long one story ranch style house in the country on 5 acres, and tons of wildlife. I had cedar bushes in front of my master bedroom windows, and the bedroom was situated at the furthest most northern corner of the house. I had hung up a humming bird feeder there, so I could watch the Ruby Throated Hummingbird, which I had never seen before (having been born and raised in S. California). I was in the kitchen one morning, and had all the windows open in the house. The kitchen was at the exact opposite end of our house. All of a sudden, I could hear a bird singing it's heart out, VERY loudly. I had a thought that maybe a bird had actually gotten into the house it was so loud. I started following the sound, and ended up walking the entire length of our house to the master bedroom, and there was a gorgeous Baltimore Oriole sitting on the hummingbird feeder, singing his big ole heart out. Our Hooded Orioles here in S. California also have a beautiful song, but mostly, they make this territorial sound, or a lot of chattering. They love the oriole and hummingbird feeders I put out, as well as our Giant Bird of Paradise white flowers. So, we have tons of them in our yards due to perfect nesting areas and great eats!

Sadly though today, I found a juvenile Black Headed Grossbeak dead under my kitchen window. I wasn't sure what it was at first, since the juveniles do not sport totally black heads. But, I had an adult male at my suet cake this morning, and I remembered that yesterday a bird hit our upstairs laundry room window extremely hard (as in unlikely to survive hard). I couldn't find any sign of a dead bird yesterday, but found the little guy this morning. I don't see the Grossbeaks that often at my feeders, and thought they were more migrating through, but guess I must have had a nest in my yard. So sad to lose one of the babies.

Oh, that's sad.
Maybe you should put something on your windows, so they can see them better? Its always sad when they die.

I could try putting decals on the windows, but I haven't ever had a bird fly into an upstairs window. And, we have 10' ceilings, so that upstairs window is so far up, there's no way I'm getting up on a ladder that tall! Not sure the decals will stop the young fledglings, though. Maybe a more mature bird, but babies are just so inexperienced, I'd have to totally cover up all the windows. Probably not practical.

Patty- I usually see your comments on the Citrus forum- anyway, I'm so sorry for the little baby bird. Can you hang streamers/ ribbons or something to keep them away? By the way, your advice is invaluable on growing citrus.

Thanks, Nerry. Maybe I can hang some mylar streamers across that window. Just have to find someone brave enough to climb up a ladder that high, lol! I was just sick to my heart to see that little baby dead this afternoon. And, a rather unusual bird at my feeder, too. Good idea. And glad I've helped a little with your citrus!
