Uniquely colored male Bluebird fledgling...

Well my sky blue colored Momma passed on some of her teal genes again this year, with all three nestings. The fledglings of the first two nestings were chased away once the new nesting fledged so I was only able to observe the fledglings changing to their adult colors with the third nesting. Five fledged but I think I am ony seeing four of them, two girls and two boys. Both the girls are sky blue colored like thier momma so I cannot tell them apart anymore. One boy is a beautiful light sky blue. The other boy is kinda in between the normal color of the bluebird and this sky blue male. Got some photos of the light colored male and just thought some of you might like to see him....

That is just stunning. He looks more like the color of a parakeet. I'm sure you already know this, but since there is no blue pigment in feathers, these guys must have a different feather structure that still refracts the light to look blue, but in a different shade. Very fascinating. Thanks for those great shots.

Great shots Kenn!! I am hoping our Blues will find the mealworms so I can have them come closer to the house. The house they chose is further away this year, well they didn't have much to choose from since the TRES took almost all of them by the time the Blues got here. We have four beautiful eggs though and mom is incubating so I am trying to train them to go to the mealworms. Donna

Thanks to those who commented, we love to share our birds. Angie - Missy didn't have to ask Ben to share those worms... He intended to and did give them all to her. :) It's common for the male Bluebird to feed his mate thruout her nesting times... while she's building, laying, and during incubation. He feeds her both when she's in the nestbox and also when she comes out for a break. This is one of the most delightful Bluebird behaviors to witness. Kenn

Glad to hear of your success Lisa! I'm sure pop will watch after that hopper until it can fly. My season isn't quite over, But so far fledged 11 TRES and no bluebirds. I have 2 BB pairs. One with 4 young and the other here - with 5 that are about 11-13 days old. They all appear the same age even though they hatched over a 3 day period! Every season goes SOOO fast! Even though I'm not close to done, I can feel the nesting season reaching it's end for the birds and summer FLYING by. It's sad it doesn't last longer but nature has its reasons. Stay cool! Here in the big OH we're also suffering from the heat wave. 98 degrees! ~Tim~

I enjoyed reading this tonight after a very busy weekend and want to thank you so much for sharing this. Your birding experiences are so interesting. I loved seeing the little bluebird finally make the leap in the movie and all of your photos are so incredible. Poor little mama bluebird with the hurt leg. I sure hope it heals correctly enough for her to get use from it. She is very unique in appearance and I wonder if any of her babies will look like her. Please keep us posted if you see any resemblance. The high winds have been so hard on our little birds this year.

So pretty! The blues have returned here, I think to say goodby for a few months : ( and please I DID NOT JUST SEE A JUNCO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
