Hello all,
It's good to see so many familiar 'faces.' I kinda hibernated this winter. Actually, I had a total knee replacement in Sept of last year and I'm still recuperating. I have good range of motion with the 'bionic' knee but still =lots= of pain. I'm told this is 'normal' but I have to admit being rather run down physically & psychologically from it.
However, seeing the bluebirds doing their 'spring thing' here in spring-like NW Georgia does tend to take my mind off the pain. We're finally coming out of the deep freeze with temps that are supposed to be in the 60s from today through next week.
Over the winter, I've had only 5 or so blues stick around. With the one nest box last year, 15 fledglings left the nest. Don't know where the other 10 went hoping that they all survived.
During January, 5 became 2 and I knew one of them was Daddy from last year but the second looked a lot like a male fledgling to me. A few days ago, Mama from last year appeared so I do believe that we have a fledgling hanging with the parents. Bear with me, but am I correct that last year's fledglings have molted their spotted attire? This BB has a bright blue back but the tips of the wing feathers are dark.
What surprised me this morning is that I took the binoculars to watch Daddy and the Yearling in the meal worm feeder. Daddy was eating and the Yearling was gaping just like it did last year for food!! Could this be???? Daddy kept pecking at the kid (Daddy was a real grump last year so it seems he hasn't "changed his feathers" HA). When Daddy left, the kid fed himself. Any ideas what that was all about?
Plans for this year is to swap that nest box for one that'll have a color webcam in it. Since Spring is coming quickly, I need to make sure it works, see if there's enough light to get some color (don't expect a lot), etc. I'll be working on that this week.
I also am going to try to be more organized and set up a blog somewhere for text, pics and videos. Any suggestions for a site? I did start a MySpace page for that purpose.
Anyway, hello again, dear friends....hope all has been well.
Bluebird blessings, Linda...
