I bought this new Bluebird box

I just found and purchased two BB boxes from this guy on Ebay. I spoke with him and he is very knowledgeable about BB and their needs. I really wanted the BB box that someone posted from Duncraft with the Plexiglas observation windows but the $50 price tag was a little steep for me because I wanted two. Anyway check it out. I can't wait to get mine.

Suzanne, this bluebird box looks great, I love how you can view the nest without opening the box. Funny, I had checked Ebay before purchasing the house I bought from Duncraft and didn't see these boxes on there at the time, although I am very happy with mine, it was just a bit pricey and the price on the one you purchased looks a lot more attractive.

If I get lucky and attract bluebirds to nest in my box next spring, I may look into purchasing another box and this one looks good to me. Please let me know how it works out for you.

I almost missed this one on ebay but saw it at the last minute. I got two of these for the price of one Duncraft! I will keep you posted and yours looks like a really nice box which started my search in the first place!

Now I have to figure out the baffle instructions.

Yes I put it up just as soon as I gat home with it. I did notice the male bird was on top of it a couple of times, but then they would go back to the old box. I have several birdbaths in my yard. I don't have a big yard but I make sure my birds are taken care of. I hope they will accept this box cause I sure do want a family of blues this year. Everyone say a special prayer that I will have a family of dees and blues in my yard this year. Thanks so much for everyones advice. If anyone else has any more advice please let me no. Thanks again!

parrotmommie, so sorry about the one baby Blue. That is one reason to monitor nestboxes, you can discover problems sometimes before it is too late. Check out sialis.org for tons of info on Bluebirds and other cavity nesting birds. When I have Blues nesting in my yard I check the nest every day to every other day until day 13, that is the last day you can check, after that if you open the box you may cause premature fledging. Bluebirds are very tolerant of monitoring. Good luck, hope the second nesting is successful. Donna

I have been hosting blue birds for years, and have yet to witness their fledging. Somehow they always manage to get out and gone late in the day. I know the direction they go, as the parents always take off in the same direction when they come back for worms. But the babies never come back to my place for worms themselves. My satisfaction has to just come from hosting them, feeding them, and knowing they took off on their own according to schedule.

pife, Painting nestboxes is not necessary, but if you want to preserve the wood, you only need to paint the outside. To keep them cool, use a light color. Painting the exterior of the box white or light tan (before nesting season begins) can help reduce interior temperatures. Here is a great site for reference about nestboxes, safe setup, and monitoring. You can also do a site search there for more info about paint and nestboxes. I ended up purchasing an 18" Baffle at Petsmart, it was on sale so I grabed it, I only hope it fits the pole I have.

My next step is buying some fishing line and washers and then some of the Mylar ribbon so I can be ready with a Sparrow Spooker once the first egg is laid next spring.

Oh it's going to be a long winter, I'm so sad to see summer coming to an end, it's never long enough.

That's for sure but maybe we will get a nice long extended summer because of all the rain earlier. Maybe we won't get 12' of snow starting in October! I hope, I hope.
