Blue Bird Babies

We have a nest with 4 eggs in it. They started hatching yesterday-There was 3 babies and one egg when I looked.

I have not bothered them today, so do not know if the 4th hatched or not yet.

Mom comes out of the box for meal worms when I call her.

Seems late for us, but am glad to be hosting her and her babies in our back yard.

Congrats Connie,
It does seem late for them, but I had that happen the year before last. I was afraid the babies wouldn't finish molting before the cold weather hit. I think they did just fine though. Hopefully the forth egg has hatched. Hope all goes well for you.

Did a count later today and there are 4 babies.
Mom did not eat the meal worms I put out today. Weather has gone to not being so hot and so I guess she is happy with the bugs that she can get on her own.
She and Dad were busy at the nest site and I saw several other blues in the area (not sure if they are their young but they seems to tolerate them being around, so I am guessing that they are.)

You can put up nestboxes any time of year. If bluebirds are resident in your area year round, they are always checking out potential nest sites. If they are not winter residents, the box will be ready when they arrive. We put up a nextbox on Valentine's Day 10 years ago; a pair of bluebirds checked it out within 15 minutes, and we've had bluebirds ever since. The neatest thing happened the other day, Hubby was leaving to go to work, he rides his bicycle, and was getting it out of the shed(which has a front door that is a sliding glass door without the door!) and a robin was sitting right there on a picnic table squaking at him, he commented how weird it was to me, so I went into the shed to see if she might have a baby in there(worried as we have a cat that lives in there), looked around couldn't see anything but the cat...so was reaching down to pick up a garden tool right at the front door...and there was a baby robin....frozen in fear!!! I put my gloves on and picked it up and put it on a branc of a bush, near where mama robin was...by this time poppa robin was there too! and boy did momma put up a fuss!!! She musta been giving that baby what for!!! I walked away and when I came back they were all gone!!! Was so neat to get that close to the baby!!!I felt so good saving it from kitty!!!

Baby blue? Baby blue eyes? Which blue spruce is it?

Difficult to tell for sure. Ive got about 12 baby blue and 2 baby blue eyes, all about that size at present. Of my trees (ymmv), the baby blue are definitely more blue while the baby blue eyes are more silvery (like yours). Ignoring the color, my BBE appear to have that form/branching style. .The best way to tell, however, may be how much you paid. The baby blue tend to be about half the price (or less) of the baby blue eyes, at least here in Ohio (where conifers seem to be noticeably cheaper compared to whenever I see prices mentioned from other parts of country on here). Id say if you paid (full price) $70 or more it is prob BBE. $60 or less, probably BB. I got most of my BB on special (they just picked the worst looking ones and marked em down to 10). I like em both and looking forward to seeing variations in the seed grown BB. The BB are also supposed to be narrower which I like.

Which blue spruce- baby blue or baby blue eyes?

Ive had 2 baby blue eyes and 10 or so baby blue in the ground about 4 years(one year the local nursery got waaaaaaaay tooo many baby blue(blue is cool blue is cool blue is cool blue is cool blue is cool, and in case you forget blue is cool!)), pulled out the worst looking/greenest ones and sold them for cheap). Baby blue eyes is noticeably denser, at least in these smaller specimens. Baby blue is seed grown and thus there will be some variation bw specimens (Ive observed this is color with some noticeably more green or blue than others). According to the grower in Ontario, Canada, baby blue is a “slightly narrower” version of a basic P. Pungens. Only have one close pic of baby blue eyes and none of baby blue. If it was me, Id get one or two of each. If I had to pic just one, I would pick the baby blue eyes. It seems like one of the older tried and true varieties that has been largely been overlooked in more recent years. The baby blue eyes specimen I planted in the front yard, which is largely shade, has been doing quite well. In time though, who knows as I also like the idea that baby blue will probably be narrower in the long term.

4 little one's few off today. I missed seeing it. Grand kid's had to be picked up and when I got back, they were gone.

Congratulations Connie! Great to hear they all made it. It is still surprising to me that they would nest so late. I'm happy to hear they had a successful outcome. Sorry you missed the fledging. Hopefully the parents will bring the young back to the mealworm feeder so you can see them. My last batch of young Blues are still coming for the mealworms every morning.
