First you need to find out if your problem is actually Late Blight, or if it is something else.

thanks for the link, I must say I not 100% sure if its verticullum or late blight or both? What I do know is even after pruning away some of the affect leaves and stems it still coming. It seems to all over plant an not just on the bottom of the plant. Based on what I ve seen and what I observed this morning I'm leaning towards late blight. That said is there any way to slow ot down or stop it> Any sprays? Can I pick the green tomatoes and let them ripen off the plant? This really stinks!!!

on the leaves, are the black areas blotchy or are the distinct spots?

you could have early blight

keeping the foliage dry, if you can, will slow either one

If there is some color blush when you pick them they will ripen off the plant.

technically if they are "mature green" they can still ripen off the plant. This is not something I can exactly show or explain what I mean by "mature green". It's a change in the green color (greenish white) that probably wont show well in internet quality pics.

the leaves have black spots on them...to me the spots look distict or at least they are very visable. We have had 3 days rain free and the forcast looks good but beyond should I put a tarp over them if it rains?
As far as mature green, i think some are but most are not. I can see a few are just about to turn orange. Perhaps Ill get a few this year but it doesnt look good.
is the anything I can use to kill the spores and or spread of the blight?

I would like to know if the tomatoes are safe to eat. Mine have LB and even the ones I pick at the pink stage eventually develop the LB rot. can I cut off the nasty spots and safely eat?

My condolences to you, matthew. This was my first year, too. It's been tough...one to remember and tell the grandkids about! :-)

Okay, I think I answered my own question. I just cut into a few 'maters and the rot goes pretty deep. :(
