Baby Blues fledged today-

5 more baby blues out into the world. Did not see them go, but they were there this morning but Mom and Dad were not feeding. I had things to do, so could not sit and wait and watch. Then at noon I went to look and did not get clicked and scolded, so I knew they were gone. Kind of glad, as the box is in the middle of my garden and I need to weed.

Mom and Dad have come back several times and begged for worms this afternoon.

I also just had babies fledge. 4 of them. Unfortunatly though, unlike you, I only have a father. MRs bluebird proved again how female bluebirds just can't survive in some areas. (Esp my neighborhood - I've lost 2-3 this season!)

Like you,I originally had 5 but apparently dad couldn't handle that many and it died over night. He's done a great job but in my boxes it looks like nesting may be over for the year.

Lisa: Thanks for your post. I did not see the babies last week, husband did. I have checked the nest- it is empty. I have heard some twitter out in the forest that adjoins our grounds- I'd like to think it might be the fledglings, but that may be wishful thinking. Things have been hectic lately so I have not opened the box as faithfully as in past years. There are no broken shells or feathers in box or on ground underneath. The nest was completely clean. We've never had racoons; I have heard owls very far off, but they have never appeared on the property. This box is close to our screen porch and under my office window, so I can usually monitor it by sight most of the time. This box has been in use since 2003; it's had at least one clutch per year. There's another box closer to the woods, and I've seen Mom and Dad Bluebird checking it out in the last two days. I've already cleaned out the box in question, and am going to install a baffle. It's silly to think that standing sentinel during the day will keep the nest box safe at night. Thanks again for your help.

Thanks Donna and Ken....i had made up my mind that i wasn't gonna budge from my swing this morning...i've been watching them for the past few days because i knew fledging time was getting very close...then when i saw the parents constantly flying to the nest then flying just a short distance away and singing their hearts out i knew it was time.....no no no...i wasnt going anywhere...lol...i can hear them up in the oak trees and sometimes can see them.....this is soooooo cool !!!....their house is all clean now but isnt it a bit late for another nesting?...i'll be watching closely...thanks again !!!

Congrats Indigo! We had four little ones fledge the 3rd of July. I feed them mealworms/waxworms/crickets and so far they haven't brought the babies to the feeder but I have seen them out and about in the yard. I saw all four of them on Firday and at least 3 of them yesterday. Today the parents have them further away but it is very very windy too, hard flying weather. I hate to sound dumb, but what happens to the mamma bluebirds? I am new to bluebirding. Thanks.

As I have mentioned before, it is not normal for the mom to abandon nestlings.

If she goes missing,it is likely the result of death. (From Vehicles, Hawks, Owls,etc.)

I really am curious to know how I lost multiple females. I have yet to have a male bluebird disappear. (Knock on wood)

I will be pleasantly surprised if we get another nesting, but it could be in one of the neighbors yards, as they have all put up boxes, but I do not think they monitor very well.
If they do come to our yard, I hope they choose the other box, as we have a camera in it.
Mine are still coming back for meal worms, but the worms are just about gone and I doubt I will order more, unless I see a nest being built.
It has been fun.
