whenever I hear people discussing ways to discourage the sparrow I have to ask myself why? As You can easily see from my photo's when there is an abundant supply of food the birds will all mingle well. From my observation it is only when the food is in short supply that they really begin to be territorial. The question then becomes, why is the seed in short supply? No doubt the answer here is simple economics. People don't care to spend a lot of money on expensive birdseed, only to have it consumed by the less desirable birds and they don't get to see the species they are really interested in. From my experience the solution here is to shop around for your wild bird seed. By example, we have a local store that caters specifically to feeding and attracting wild birds. They sell a general mix of wild bird seed for $15 for a 20lb bag. On the other hand, Walmart has 20lb bags of the same seed for $10, however at Walmart it is a seasonal item and by now you probably can't find it. How would you like to find a year around source that has a better selection at prices far below the average retail store prices? In almost every community there is a store that specializes in selling feed, grain and hay for horses or farm animals. When my sister goes to the feed mill to buy feed for her horses I tag along and buy 50# bags of premium wild bird seed (mixed seed & peanuts) for $12 plus I buy a 50# bag of black oilseed sunflower seed for another $13. I then mix the two together and I end up with a premium blend for an average of $.25/lb. If you cannot find a Feed & grain supply in your community check out TSC (Tractor Supply Co.) TSC is also a great place to find feeders of all types for prices far below what you find in the regular retail stores, but then feeders are so simple to build i don't see why anyone would pay the prices they ask in most stores. While we are on the subject of bird feed, you may be surprised at how much you throw away every month without realizing it. When you bake a ham or a roast trim off the excess fat and put that in your suet feeder, the birds love it. At my house we all love to eat acorn or butternut squash. When you hollow out the seeds put them out for the birds, here again, they love it. Making a salad? Save the carrot peelings of the birds and by all means, be sure to save your orange or grapefruit peelings. I have seen a Bluejay grab an entire half section grapefruit peel and fly it up into the pine tree. Stale popcorn, potato chips, pretzels, breakfast cereal and cookies all go over well with the birds and as silly as it may sound, even leftover porky beans, whole kernel corn or green beans will quickly disappear when the birds find them. As you can see, I have taken feeding the birds rather seriously however to tell the truth it is more an means to an end. Since I retired last June I have taken up nature photography as a hobby, and since it is a bit too cold to get out in the woods like i would like to do, this is a way i can bring nature to me while i comfortably sit in the house...LOL. Gein that the subject of this thread was how to attract cardinals I thought i might post a couple more Cardinal Picks, along with one of my favorite pics of a Bluejay.

I had nearly the exact thing happen this year (2025). This box had crisis last year when I found the nestlings wet, their nest soaked and berry seeds abundant. What I was told was that the parents were feeding them non-native berries because there weren't enough insects! I took the nestlings out, cleaned the box, replaced with a dry nest and supplemented with mealworms. Two males and a female ran nearly 100 mealworms into that nestbox within the next 20 minutes! It was a rescue mission. The nestlings all survived and fledged three days later. But this year, that nestbox wasn't touched until way late in the season. I was glad to see they were back, better late than never. But maybe not. Four eggs, four nestlings, all looked well. I checked them a day ago, providing rehydrated mealworms. I noticed some dog doo near where I put the mealworms. I wonder if that could affect the nestlings by contamination. I took the bos down and it felt light. I wondered if they had fledged but it was too soon. All four melding together and decomposing! This park is chemical-free, the only one in Orange (CA). All the other nestlings in the other five boxes had a good run. This was a special box and had yet another disaster this year! No evidence of foul play, no insects, etc. Another seasoned monitor told me it might be due to the male not returning, maybe killed in a fight, and the female abandons the nest. The nest box is down, washed out and waiting for a thorough cleaning. I hope they return to this box next season. We'll see. Very sad.

The only way I've found to keep them away is not to use any type of feeder they can access. No tray feeders and no hopper feeders big enough for them to perch on. I have a tube feeder and a mesh tube feeder for nyjer seed, a window feeder (too small for grackles and the like), and a Squirrel Buster Standard. The grackles come by once in awhile but there is nowhere for them to really get much of anything. Mostly they squawk their frustration and then I chase them off and I don't see them again for a few days. I saw one try to land on the squirrel buster - he sort of teetered there for a minute and then fell/flew off.

The magic halo concept is 95-100% effective for me for deterring house sparrows. The main idea is that you need the "halo" on top for preventing the HoSPs from descending from above, and the wires to prevent them from approaching laterally. The "halo" (aka top-cover) can be anything that will prevent passage. For my suet log, this is a piece of 1/4" density hardware cloth that is 2' x 4' laying over the top of support that the suet log hangs from. For my sunflower and safflower feeders, the top-covers are extra-large plastic weather domes by Aspects. I then surround the feeders with a network of weights suspended by 30 gauge to 26 gauge hobby wire. The nimble woodpeckers, nuthatch, chickadees, titmice, goldfinch, house finches, purple finches, and even some juncos fly right through. Harris' sparrow (indigenous) ground feeds with the juncos. The house sparrows and starlings find somewhere else to feed. The wires sometimes break of course, and if I don't get right on it and re-hang the wires then I will get a few house sparrows invading. I have a self-designed arbor constructed from steel support tubing with sections of cattle panel over the top which makes it very easy for me to hang feeders and wire anywhere I choose. If I get the occasional stubborn house sparrow I deploy a deluxe-repeating sparrow trap until I get the bugger. These measures have kept my feeders from getting mobbed by the pestilent sparrows and starlings and allowed me to continue to enjoy watching the birds at my feeders. There isn't much else interesting to see out there in the winter!
