Blue bird glossary

Of the hundreds of posts I've read (as a new guy)and not familiar with the acronymns used, such would be helpful.

I figured out HOSP but not TRES for example.

2nd. Are Bluebirds migratory? Do they stay in the area but only use the box for nesting? Do I clean it out after each hatching?

Some basic info that seems hard to find.

Pondering in the panhandle of Florida.

Ponder no more! TRES...tree swallows, HOWR...house wren...CAWR...Carolina Wren..just to name a few.

I live in the deep south, so they are year around residents, I have no idea about other parts of the country.

Nestboxes should always be cleaned after babies fledge..in fact, I clean mine the very next day by hosing it out, scrubing the inside, then rinsing well. I leave the door open for a day to dry thoroughly.

Some birds, including the blues will sometimes roost in boxes during the winter when temps are very cold.

Hi, I'm looking into 'Blue Satin' as my 'Blue Bird' (at about 7 feet) died one spring - likely from a cold winter. Does anyone grow both of these, or at least 'Blue Satin'? Are there any nests in the boxes? I also think they are Tree Swallows. If they are in there from last fall or summer they are probably babies that could not get out of the boxes. Tres need a ladder if you will to help them fledge from the nest. All that needs to be done is to make some deep scratches or kerfs on the inside of the box leading up to the hole to help them climb out. I agree with above. Male Indigo Bunting. I love seeing them at the feeder, especially with gold finches....they remind me of blue and yellow Easter eggs. Poor little guy.. : (

Thanks nicholsworth. I have a couple small "ponds"....just 300 gallon rubbermaid stock tanks sunk into the ground in my back yard. I don't have fish....just frogs and sometimes snakes (and water lilies and lotus). But one day as I rode up in the lane, I saw a great blue heron perched on the top of the house, looking at my little ponds! I have the feeling that raccoons visit my ponds every night. They've knocked some of the big rocks lining the edge into the water. I quit feeding birds in my back yard because the raccoons would visit and cause all sorts of ruckus and problems. They're too smart for their own good. haha I don't think I'd ever have fish out here. There's too much to worry about.....
