Red-breasted nuthatch fledged!

We had several in the yard,..couldn't fly, one we found dead, my wife was babysitting them today so no neighbors cat or anything else would harm them. I took over tonight,..they're doing better now.
My wife took this video.

Here is a link that might be useful: Baby running up the tree!

I would have hired armed guards to watch over these little cuties!! Thanks for the video...I LOVE these birds! You are so lucky!

Adorable little babies! I never thought that a nuthatch could climb up a tree before it could fly. Love the sound effects on the video.

Was the baby running up the tree one of the two you found, or did your wife just happen to be in the right place at the right time to take the video?

That is a handsome bird!! Could the box have some insect that he is interested in? I couldn't find any reference to having eggs more than once a season.

Had them nesting and successfully raised a batch at least a month ago,...seems male is every day at the nesting box shouting to attract a mate,...doesn't he knows breeding is over! I don't really get what's going on. Have them for years but never seen them have two broods.

We get them here in south central Illinois. We had one a couple years ago that stayed around about a year and a half then disappeared. We've had another one now for about 9 months. The odd thing is we only ever see just one, never a pair. They are busy little guys and hide a tremendous amount of seed.

Thank you all!
Not sure which one, wife happened to be there at the right time,
Some are still on the ground today,..this one looks like something wrong with its beak.
Can you you tell what's happening here?

The parents are doing a extremely good job looking after them,...video shows this also.

Lovely pics and video. Poor baby- I'm not sure what happened to it. I hope someone sheds some light on it. The parents seem very vigilant and dedicated. It's a first for me to see red-breasted nuthatches. Thanks so much.

As usual, great pics Konrad!
Is it possible something attacked the baby, but then maybe got scared away?
