I've actually had better luck with the clearance sale plants than with items received in the mail from some nurseries--perhaps because I can pick the plant. It really is hit or miss, though; if you want a particular plant, you may be disappointed. They don't have everything that is in their catalogs, but they seem to have things & varieties not in their catalogs also. Overall I'd say that I've had about an 85% success rate, losses mostly because the bareroots I've tended to lose by not potting them promptly, and a few items I didn't realize weren't really hardy here (like the verbena I just brought home!). The only thing I've tried twice with no success are the poppies. At $.99 to $1.49 for anywhere from a single perennial to a bag of 6 or 8 perennials, it has been worth the loss rate to me--I still come out ahead. Never gotten a diseased specimen either. Some are potbound--but they seem to do alright. Last Friday they had gotten in a lot of bareroot stock--lots of different varieties of blackberry in particular,other berries, also apple, plum, pear, persimmon, pecan, walnut, roses, other trees, rhubarb, strawberries. They all looked good & were $4-$10.. And also bulk crates of different lilies and such. I resisted, with great difficulty, the dwarf honeycrisp apple --just don't know where I'd put it. After I got home I realised I could try espalier training it against the fence, but still not sure if the antique apples about 2 blocks away could pollinate it (think I'll ask this in the fruit forum). It will likely be gone next time anyway. Many of the perennials and shrubs that I saw last visit were gone, but some new ones in. They had all vegetable seeds for $.50. I got a lovely variegated leaf dogwood "golden Shadows"; but the Ninebark "coppertina" that I saw last time and decided that I wanted was gone. (I should know well enough to get something when I see it). Also got a clethra, sedum, clematis, several other nice garden flowers.

The poppies did not make it. The phlox did not make it, except I, like you, have hopes yet for one of them to maybe just be dormant. 2 tree peonies....looking good potted up in 2 litre bottles. Not sure where I'm going with those, but know it will be a massive undertaking to plant them 'right', and I sure don't ever want to have to move them!. One of them did not look to be a graft, but is all one long root. Both have the tree peony foliage though. Lost one Heuchera...all the others are looking good in pots. The tricolor butterfly bush turned out to be pink. It has been planted with care quite a while and has been loaded with blooms. One Viburnum is thriving...and another is hanging on but will make it I think. The lilacs are still in their pots. I am especially thrilled about George Eastman. I can't find much on line about it, but saw somewhere that it is a weeping lilac. How cool is that? The NO ID lilac appears to have the same foliage as the Josee I ended up not being able to pass up locally at $6...so I may have 2 of them! One of the lilacs I can't read the name on the pot...might have to hunt up your checklist to verify what it might be. Hydrangea...looking good in its pot. Black Knight butterfly bush blooming it its pot. I'm still wondering just where I'm going with all this stuff. I have a lot of property, but when one has so many shrubs, it sure is a puzzle. I've make the mistake of putting a butterfly bush in a bed, and now I need to move a lot of things out since the butterfly bush exploded this season. I also had a Limelight Hydrangea explode in the same bed. It seems I never plant anything in the right place the first time. Oh...and the blueberry is living in a pot for now too. I think that's about it...That's enough, wouldn't you say. Though I lost a few things, all the other fabulous goodies more than made up for what it cost, even with shipping. Josee lilac sells on line for $20, and George Eastman for $30....so you did real good! I too did not get to all the plants promptly...there was just soooo many, especially considering what all I got at the Louisville swap just about 3 weeks earlier. Thanks again Raee! Don't cha know I placed an order for some fragrant hosta with them a couple of days ago? But more than likely, they were already moved to the new location a long time ago. In the notice of shipment from Nancy just in my inbox, she is shipping Monday, by UPS, and she is now using a smart phone. I mean, standing right there in the garden beside the very hosta I'll be getting, knows instantly if she has what I want, and now she doesn't have to call anyone back, can get the email on her phone too, not take a handwritten note with her to the garden, all right there on the smarty phone. Life will never be the same, think of all the steps that a creatively used smarty phone can save nursery people! And once again, I'm saying, NO MORE HOSTA (this summer). Wish I was driving up north on the 18th though.
