LOL Anita! Mine fledged on day 16 this year both here and one nesting at the park too. At least the ones here I knew could fly well as I saw them the day they fledged but not when they fledged. Congrats on your fledglings!

Hi Donna, never had them fledge this early but maybe the warm weather helps. The last one went sometime this afternoon. I've been home all day and missed them all going. Figures. Interestingly I saw a male bird go into the nestbox a little while ago. I haven't taken the nest out yet, and there was one unhatched egg left.

Congratulations on the fledging, Anita! Hope everyone achieves lift-off! I've found that the 2nd nestings and especially the 3rd ones often fledge on day 16 or 17--maybe because insects are more available and the babies have plenty to eat. I remember a few years ago there was a nesting that had only one baby hatch. He was the chubbiest little thing and I had doubts of him fitting through the entrance hole to fledge--but fledge he did and on day 16!

Our bluebird pair's second brood this year had only one hatchling out of 4 eggs (no thanks to the da#@$ HOWR). With great weather, lots of rain, and plentiful insects, that little girl grew very fast, fledging on day 15. As an only child, she is spoiled with all the attention. She is bold and precocious, and now following the parents everywhere and imitating their every move. With the great weather and plentiful food, I suspect she might stay to help with the next brood, due any day now. That will be fun to watch.

well, I cleaned out the nestbox and there were lots of bitty black ants in there, which didn't seem to bother the babies or the parents. I washed the box out, trying hard to clean up the spatters of blood that were on the walls :(
I put some motor oil on the pole and the bottom of the box just in case they want to nest there again. When Janie told me to use axle grease I went looking in my garage and came up with motoroil. I used it on my hummingbird hanger and I actually WATCHED the ants walk up to it, feel around and turn around and leave. The ants that had been hanging out all over my hummer feeder are completely gone with the careful application of regular old motor oil. So I'm trying that on my nestbox pole, too. Hopefully will see some fledglings soon. Hoping for one more go round like last summer.

... spatters of blood were on the walls ?

Yes, quite early in the nesting mother bird had a wound on her head and there were bloody spatters on the eggs and the walls. I posted about it, quite the horrible thing to wake up to. I quickly beefed up my spooker and put on a wren guard, and there was no more warfare, thank goodness. I was worried sick when I first saw it but she clearly had a head wound above her left eye. It healed nicely but you can still identify mama by her battle scar.
