Why is the red wing black bird attacking the egret

Egrets often stop by the small man-made wetlands out in my backyard. Recently, whenever a egret lands in the wetland, a red wing black birds flies out and attacks it. Eventually the egret leaves. It's sort of annoying.

Does the black bird have a nest nearby? Do they have nest in the middle of a reeds? In any case, how long do they defend their nest for?

here anyway the red wings build a nest close to the ground usually where there are many upright stems close to water.
they weave between stems a large nest of fibers grass stems and soft bark and leaves and even strips of bark and then line the nest with dry grass. the males get very defensive when the female is nesting and will attack almost anything or anybody who gets close to the nest. here most of the females raise two broods from early spring to late spring the males after nesting season flock together and leave mid summer to fall for warmer climates.
the females stay with the young ones till they can fly and take care of them selves.

We had a bad problem downtown, but the city did something about it. Before that, I had 3 hanging around, always kind of spooked me out, but I wanted to get along with them, started feeding them along with the carnivore woodpeckers, dry cat food and meat scraps cut up and no bones to drop on a roof. That went on awhile, watched one eat a piece of apple one day, interesting birds. But then a sick one showed up on my front porch at the water dish I set out, and I found 2 dead in the gutter a half block down, laid there for 2 or more weeks weeks, ick. We have a problem with West Nile, they had already done their sampling, confirmed its presence in the area, so wouldn't come pick them up. I thought they were a health hazard and if it had been in front of my house, would have disposed of them. So West Nile took its toll on them, now we have a fair amount of owls, that may help keep them away. Haven't been bothered by them for a couple years now, same with the larger brown woodpeckers, large flock of them. So nature has its ways, but you don't want West Nile in your area if you don't have it already. People in the two-state area have died from it (mosquitoes the carrier), usually elderly or with compromised immune systems.

Hi Grant, Wanted to respond to your message and give an update...it's been a while since I've been here! Anyhow, I ended up taking the seeds out of my bird-house so now it's just an 'ornamental' bird house. The great thing is, the finches still come around just to check but it's not the bombardment that it was before...it's just the right amount. In fact, they seem more fixated on my sunflowers these days than anything else! Good on them! As for the hummingbird feeder, it's already out and next to my Chinese Pistache tree...and guess what? Today I was looking out my front window and saw a pretty green hummingbird take a sip from the feeder! He dashed in and out pretty quickly but it was still very exciting...I hope he will be back! What I'd really love to see at some point is a Cardinal, or a Stellar's Jay. But I have a feeling those are a bit harder to attract...I'll have to do some research. The only time I've seen a Cardinal was when I visited Boyce Thomson Arboretum...I can't even remember what it sounded like but it did have a unique chirp. The one I saw was a brightly colored male and he was in a thick, leafy tree. Sadly, he flew away quickly when he saw me approaching. Anyhow, I'll keep you posted for sure if I find any better seed varieties!

There were over 100 dead birds that dropped over in Geyserville, CA off the 1010 Freeway this past Saturday. There were also a rather large number of Rooks and Choughs over in Sweden that died.....not to mention the birds in Arkansas, Kentucky, Italy and the fish, crabs, etc. in various places around the world. All in clusters, all falling on or near or within two weeks of, the New Year. Scientists are saying that mass die-offs are very common in birds, especially in winter....as for the fish and sea-creatures, they're saying red tides are on the increase in those areas. So this is hard to pin point....and don't get me started on the conspiracy theorists....egads. Thank GOD He is Sovereign over *all* of it. (Colossians 1: 19-20)

Guess that's why the RWBB attack them! Gosh it's so hard to love every creature when it eats other things you like down the food chain. Love Eagles, but love baby Ducks too! UUUGGGG. Wish there was some kind of "chow" we could grow for everything.

I guess that's the way of nature. There is an Oriole nest way up in the Pin Oak right above my feeders and deck. Twice over the last several weeks I've observed a Blue jay try to raid the Oriole nest. The female Oriole freaks out and amidst lots of squawking and fluttering, she chases off the Blue jay. I'm not sure what exactly has transpired, or what stage her nestlings are at, but Mom Oriole is still up there tending her nest.

When I was watching the parents of some Canada goslings lead them from an offshore nest rock to the safety of a flooded creek mouth two years ago, a Great Egret spotted them on a fly-over and landed on another nearby rock to take a look. Had I not been there photographing and documenting their travels, the egret most likely would have taken one of the newly-hatched chicks...
