Baiting Starlings and Sparrows?

I'm trying to rid some of the most pesky bird in my martin housing. Its seems every time I clean out their nest of my Purple Martin gourds they just come right back building.

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!

www.sialis.org is the website you need to go to. Everything you need to know is there.

You will need to trap and dispose of the house sparrows (HOSP). Unless you do, your martins may nest elsewhere. HOSP and startlings (EUST) are not protected and may be eliminated.

Thank You very much Linda. It seems the population of these birds has got to the point that they need reducing. As they as teking over many native birds cavitys.

Bluebirders routinely trap House Sparrows because they are competitors for nest boxes, and the sparrows will kill the chicks and even adult Bluebirds occasionally. I had Bluebirds nesting in a snag in my back yard for 2 years (the snag blew over last fall), and trapped several House sparrows using an inbox trap. I just got a HOSP trap. Forgive the newbie here. It has traps on both sides with a holding compartment in the center. Unfortunately I got it too late. I had my first bluebird pair just building their nest (I put up a pair of boxes last year). The nest wasn't even completed and I found the female bb dead this morning. I'm assuming it was the male HOSP that has been hanging around harrassing them. I don't even know if he has a mate. I have also seen a starling. They have no interest in that house except when the bb's are there. Anyway, the trap will go out as soon as I can get myself organized. I am planning on getting CO2. Is that a good idea? I have to get moving on this. I also have a purple martin house that I'll be opening soon.

My bluebird house hole is 1-3/8 inches. We went and measured it again last night to double check. My husband said he could put some kind of metal ring around the hole to see if that would work. And if you are thinking....Are you sure that's a starling that is getting in that small of hole in a BB house? It's unbelievable to see, but yep, it sure is! We have been bluebirding for awhile, but we have never had any problems with starlings before. It is a first. We have had great success with all bluebird nesting so far. Last year, we had 7 beautiful little bluebirds. They are so fun to watch splashing in the birdbath.

Not a pleasant task...but as you are learning, if it isn't done thats all you will have. I just eliminated my first ever house sparrow, I cried , I shook, I threw up, but I know I did the right thing for our Native birds. Best of luck.

to lisa11310 - when you killed that bird, your head is telling you that you did the right thing, but the fact that you cried, shook and threw up sounds like your heart is trying to tell you something else.
