Need an ID for N. Ohio bird

I was minding my business on the computer when all hell broke loose. In the kitchen is a built-in brick oven and 2 birds managed to make their way down the chimney on to the grill. One is hurt and the other I managed to release out back. They are black with swepted-back wings and have no problem clicking to a vertical wall. I looked thru pictures from Ohio birds.....

Chimney swifts. They nest in chimneys. They are probably chicks.

You released it at night? Did it fly away? Please take the injured one to an avian rehabber. You can google "wildlife rehabilitation ohio."

They look like Chimney Swifts to me. What is wrong with the hurt one, is it the one on the left? It looks like a fledgling, maybe it fell out of the nest and just cannot fly yet. They do nest in chimneys.

Lisa, after I get the HOSP out of the traphouse into a bag I take the bag and set something very heavy on top of it in the garage. In this way I do not actually do anything to the bird with my own hands. I tried the whacking once and seriously could not do it hard enough, I cannot squeeze them with my own hands (hubby can but I cannot) so I let something heavy do it for me. Drowning would be good I guess but seems like too much fuss for me. Much easier to take the bag in the garage, set something heavy on it and walk away for a bit. I don't feel bad like you seem to about doing it thankfully but that being said I cannot do it physically with my own hands. Shooting is fine too but like you said, you cannot always get a good shot. @Aidan Creekmore yes it's that last picture... I think your sixth. Landed right in front of me and just sat there staring at me on the deck. I quitely got up and went into the house though I wanted to run and screen just like that 10 year old post. Sprayed cutter waited. It left because my bird reflector tape moved so I am back out on the deck nervous trying to enjoy the sun here in Georgia. Lol. Should I worry?

Sparrow ID needed

I live in N.E.Ohio and I grew up on a dairy farm where we simply classified sparrows as house sparrow, field sparrow, or song sparrow, all of which we considered a minor nuisance because they constantly got into our grain bins. Since I retired last June I have taken up nature photography as a retirement hobby, and here again, those darn nuisance sparrows keep popping into the shot when I trying to get a picture of the more popular birds. But once I had the pictures I began to notice a lot more variations so out of curiosity I got a field guide, Birds of Ohio by McCormac & Kennedy Published by Lone Pine Press. The book lists 23 species of sparrows that are native to Ohio, and although I always thought a house sparrow was a native species I discovered that it is technically defined as an "Old World Sparrow", which is not native but rather it was introduced into North America from Europe. With a little bit more research I discovered that there are 63 species of sparrows that are native to North America & Canada and another 37 species of Old World Sparrows and 43 of the 63 native species and nearly all of the Old world sparrows frequent the Great Lakes Region. Needless to say, I am now looking at sparrows in a new light, and i have spent many hours photographing the lowly sparrow. To date I have documented 19 species in my yard, all confirmed by an Ornithologist from Ohio state University Extension Service.

Jeanne, what a beautiful setting. It all looks lovely together. Your DGM compote dish w/glass spoon and the other depression dishes are so neat. DF keeps telling me she is going to give me a snack set in pink that was DH's aunts and I can hardly wait. I love all of these dishes. If the Mama came down with the baby that may have fallen out of the nest or tried to fledg wont the Mom be able to get back in to feed it? I agree about contacting a rehabber but with a name like "green hummer" I imagine you know a thing ot two about birds. Can you observe if the baby is getting fed in the morning, or do you know for sure it is injured. Guess you wont be having steaks tonight! Elly, I thought Swifts were somewhat nocturnal? Am I wrong? We don't have any around here that I know of. Green hummer please keep us posted and I hope your bird comes out ok!

Thanks for the fast response. The healthy one flew as soon as it was released. I put the other in my herb garden and put a large plastic cage over it to keep any predetors
away. It's moving but not much. Will check on it in the morning.

Opened oven door and using a flashlight I see 2 more clinging to the walls. I just finished backing Monday... What kind of parents would raise a family on a hot stove and why can't turkeys be this way?

Greenhummer, they breed in chimneys because their natural breeding sources (old hollow trees) have been wiped out. Please let them complete their baby raising and then cap the chimney.

Under a plastic cage is not such a good idea. Please try a rehabber.

Swifts are on the decline too because the types of chimneys they require are seen less and less in homes. The town nearby is quite old with lots of Victorian age homes and older and you see swifts frequently. We used to get all sorts of birds down our chimneys here (1820s house with fireplaces in each room) and swifts were one of them. I left them be, pulled the glass doors shut and usually the parent fed them and they disappeared when they got old enough, prolly back up the chimney.

This is bizarre, but we had a brick loose in our original kitchen hearth and before we repaired it, somehow starling babies ended up in the adjoining cabinets in my linen drawer. Don't ask me how! I did evict them!

We have even had ducks drop down the chimney. LOL. We do not use the woodburning fireplaces anymore and the chimney are all capped.

You can search the net for instructions on how to build swift towers to replace the chimneys they used to use more easily. They are insect eaters. Good, good birds to have around.
