You may need to remove one side until they learn that the worms are there. I have left the side off and it still keeps the bigger birds (like Robins)out. I have a Red Belly Woodpecker with babies and I dont mind them coming for snacks now and then.

The "jail" type feeders are much better than the "enclosed" feeders with holes at the end. I've been all through this!
First of all BBs don't like the enclosed feeders. Red belly can reach (with their impossibly long tongues) through each hole all the way to the middle of the feeder and get all the meal worms.

Best solution: Use a "jail" type feeder, the BBs aren't "afraid of it" like the other kind, and most important, put your meals worms out at the exact same time of day - early morning is best! The BBs will be ready and waiting and they'll get most the mealies, not the other birds.

I just have a mealworm dish out attached to a birch pole that I bought. The pole is sitting in a Christmas tree type of stand so I can move it around. I put it in a spot where I knew the bluebirds would perch and whistled every time I put mealworms. At first only the chickadees and downy woodpeckers were coming to the dish (chickadees always seem to find it right away.) After a little while, the bluebirds found it, and learned to come whenever I whistled. They eat up the mealworms before anyone else can get to them. Sometimes the chickadee or downy sneaks in, but the bluebirds get the vast majority.

Thank you all for the info. We have taken one side from the feeder, but so far nothing has gone in. Have a b b suet mixture, and pellets,but can not find any mealy worms in any of the feed and seed, or bait stores. Guess we will have to order some on line. One would think with as many b b runs as we have in our area, some one would be selling the worms. I don't know what a jail cell type feeder looks like, but If I see something that looks like it may work, I will give it a try. Thanks again.

the jail type or cage type are bars on end with spaceing between close enough to let the little birds fly into the platform. but tight enough tha the bigger birds don't get through. the one my nephew built me was a plywwod floor with wooden dowels about 1 1/2 inces center around the four sides with a plywood roof to keep out some of the rain or snow. there were two of the dowels next to each other that were not glued and could raise to fill or clean
others are made of wire squares of fence type material with the open spaces to let the little ones fly in. A dust devil blew mine down and shattered it. but was great while i had it.
