tree sparrows

2 days ago I noticed 4 to 6 tree sparrows hanging around, never have had any before...have BB in my nesting box eggs are 10 days old. So was reading replys to my snake possiblity and someone said something about wrens killing the babies...so my husband does home remodeling so we have extra siding left, he made a wren shield with a extra piece of siding. So now the tree sparrows are gone, could they have been trying to take over the nest box? I quess it was good timing putting on the wren guard...this is all new to us were first timers trying for blue's. I'm hoping this group of eggs survive when they hatch, didn't know all the threats these lovely birds have going against them.

Tree Sparrows are not the ones who will bother your BB nest. It is the English House Sparrow that you need to be worried about.

Tree Sparrows are not cavity nesters and will not harm anything. So if you saw Tree Sparrows, you need not worry. Is it possible that you meant to say you saw House Sparrows? What did these birds look like? If they had a gray head and a black mask, they are House Sparrows and you should put up a sparrow spooker as soon as possible. here has been a nasty winter with winds ans snow and below zero temps. mixed with some sunny cold days. When it's at it's worst the birds come in flocks and they eat almost everything, I have several cage suet trays and another tub of suet mix on a platform. Even the towhees and juncos and a few of the doves eat suet and suet mixes. I don't get many sparrows but they try the suet too. I rarely se a finch on the suet tray. the woodpeckers and the pesky starlings show up too. The sunny days most stay away but must be close by cause the next bad day they are back in numbers.

I also use the socks which are used almost exclusively by goldfinches this year (last year the pine siskins were all over). There's a lot of spillover, which makes juncos and other sparrows very happy. Not to mention the mourning doves, and the turkeys. Turkeys were a big problem when one sock dangled down within reach - the turkeys discovered they could peck a hole in the sock and empty it down to the ground, where they sucked it all up. As for your original question "How much does a single bird eat in a day any way?", I don't know the answer, but I had 18 goldfinches on the socks this morning and they have been diligently working at lowering the levels. They are all Swamp Sparrows. A hatch-year (HY) White-throated Sparrow, which you could see in its first fall/winter would have white wing bars and would also have the white throat, yellow lores, and black/white head stripes of an adult (After hatch year [AHY]), just paler than an adult. I also saw my first Chipping Sparrow of the season a few days ago. I had American Tree Sparrows during the winter, but I hadn't seen one for a while so I looked closely at the bird and saw the black eye-line and no breast spot. Does anyone see the two sparrows at the same time? Claire
