Ha Konrad, I am always jealous of your red breasted nuthatches. Other than the bluebird, they are my favorite bird.
The orioles have come back and built a nest in the same choke cherry tree, the same branch for 4 years in a row. AND now a new one in the pine tree. I will get to see 2 nests fledge :)

How far apart are the nestboxes? Bluebirds are very territorial. Their territory is an area, not just a nestbox. Linked below is a web page that discusses recommended distance between nestboxes. This time of year, the weather mimics spring, and we often see behaviors as if it were really spring. Also, if the bluebirds are resident there year-round, they will continue to protect what they consider "their territory" year-round. Over the winter, families might stay together and get along just fine. But the competition will really get serious in Spring. Here is another link Andrea. Might be visiting due to low food sources nearby. Have you seen it since you photographed it? It has some good points to it as well with forest seed dispersal and economic uses in Canada. Don't all squirrels have similar opportunistic eating of eggs and young birds? It is a native squirrel and one would think it balances out in the end with predation on others. I found a young Robin last spring that had fallen out of it's nest for lack of room and a Eastern Grey squirrel was going after it. I put it back in the nest, but had I not been there I'm pretty sure the squirrel would have killed it. That happens in nature all the time - people don't like to see it or may get too focused on other species they prefer more, etc. I'm not sure if calling it a 'terrorist' is entirely fair unless one cannot stand any small bird being eaten that they have become attached to personally. They eat what they eat. Many birds, snakes, and other mammals eat baby anything if they can get a chance. Here is a link that might be useful: Red Squirrels

Now Now!! You have to learn to think outside the box (oops!) Think of that table...with the rust all sanded off and painted a tasteful wine red with the handles gilded....and think of it reupholstered in a lovely soft muted gold velvet. Think of the tilt back...er up...oiled and in working condition. Imagine that in your media room. There are drawers to store coasters and napkins...perhaps even books and video tapes....and there is that lovely pull out tray to use for hors d'ouvres. To quote Jay..."Sold? or not sold?" I say "sold".. Linda C

Gosh, Konrad wish my red breasted nuthatches would use a nestbox! Every year they try in a dead tree and it seems every year they get booted out or have a failed nesting. Their first attempt this year was thwarted by a House Sparrow trying to take over their cavity they dug way up in a dead Poplar tree. Then a woodpecker made it larger. Then they moved to the other side of the woods and tried again. Not sure what might have happened there but I haven't been seeing them anymore so who knows. I know my Dees natural cavity nests always fail due to Red Bellied Woodpeckers. This year my Dees nesting in my birdhouse, yeah! Do you have a special house for the RBNH's? I also have Orioles building nests in my woods. We usually have two to three families around the yard.

I live in Michigan, and they come to the feeders ( I feed them peanuts) only in the winter and when it gets warmer, they are gone. I was lucky enough to have them here 2 years in a row, but it was 5 years before I saw them. It would be amazing if they chose one of my nest boxes. PLEASE post pictures :)
