a Baltimore oriole build a nest in a pine tree:

She has been building for 3 days :) I have another oriole nest on the other side of the house.

Ha Konrad, I am always jealous of your red breasted nuthatches. Other than the bluebird, they are my favorite bird.
The orioles have come back and built a nest in the same choke cherry tree, the same branch for 4 years in a row. AND now a new one in the pine tree. I will get to see 2 nests fledge :)

I don't have Japanese beetles, but have gazillions of other types of beetles! Mostly these small black beetles that are crawling around everywhere, including my garage. Also some large black beetles, as well as a few Oriental beetles. Maybe it's a great beetle year!!

It's a learning experience for you. I think everyone is a little bit hyper about RRV and maybe we all need to calm down a bit. Roses do have odd growth sometimes. All plants do if you think about it. They're called mutations and happen more frequently than you realize. If they're advantageous plants keep them otherwise they may happen once never to be seen again. And SOOOOO many things can cause a change in growth habit to a plant. Weather, soil, nutrients, applications, etc., etc., etc. can be the cause of a change in the growth. A watchful eye and caution are good things as long as they don't lead to panic.

They mate in late February. Tulsa Audubon society used to have an event where for when they were displaying at Oxley nature center. Tulsa might just be at the crossroads of breeding and non breeding territory. Tall Grass is probably in the breeding territory. They have a spectacular display. Where are you Scott? The breeding range was in the north east corner of the state, non breeding south of that but still east. If you're not in those areas you could have a rare siting. You can go to Ebirds and post the siting if you want.

Gosh, Konrad wish my red breasted nuthatches would use a nestbox! Every year they try in a dead tree and it seems every year they get booted out or have a failed nesting. Their first attempt this year was thwarted by a House Sparrow trying to take over their cavity they dug way up in a dead Poplar tree. Then a woodpecker made it larger. Then they moved to the other side of the woods and tried again. Not sure what might have happened there but I haven't been seeing them anymore so who knows. I know my Dees natural cavity nests always fail due to Red Bellied Woodpeckers. This year my Dees nesting in my birdhouse, yeah! Do you have a special house for the RBNH's? I also have Orioles building nests in my woods. We usually have two to three families around the yard.

I live in Michigan, and they come to the feeders ( I feed them peanuts) only in the winter and when it gets warmer, they are gone. I was lucky enough to have them here 2 years in a row, but it was 5 years before I saw them. It would be amazing if they chose one of my nest boxes. PLEASE post pictures :)
