Scott, Our local weekly newspaper had a photo of the deer from the 'deer attack' here in Love County on the front page of the November 27, 2009, edition. It was a 6-point 122-lb. buck. Our local paper, The Marietta Monitor, is very small and doesn't have a website or I'd link it so y'all could see that deer. In that photo, he's standing near the front door of the house. I know a few more details now, including the fact that the deer followed the woman into the garage and, as her husband tried to get the deer off of her, one of its' antlers became entangled in the man's belt and that is why the deer dragged the man down the driveway. Even after the man was able to separate the antler from his belt, the deer followed the couple back to the garage where they tried to fight it off with a sledge hammer and some tree pruning loppers. They are an older couple (I know this because they've been married 51 years) and I am sort of amazed that all they suffered was lacerations and bruising. It wouldn't have surprised me if they'd had broken a hip or pelvis when it knocked them to the ground. Our undersheriff, who eventually arrived on-scene and later shot the deer when it returned to the house and charged at him, said there was so much blood outside the garage that he figured someone had to be dead. He had the best quote in the newspaper article when he said "I have hunted deer, but I have never been hunted by one". Dawn

Thanks-getting a Brown Creeper that close, while actually holding a camera, with sun behind me, has never happened before! I heard it coming and got ready, just had a fraction of second to get it, and had to focus though intervening branches, so it was a serendipity Trail cams could be considered OFF TOPIC, but I frequently get photos of wild turkeys, have also captured photos of owls, hawks, and ducks, etc. I usually put the cam on top of the mountain behind our house near a pond. It uses a regular flash and is fast, clear, works perfectly, but animals quickly learn to avoid the flash, so I kept trying to buy an infra-red cam, but in vain. Even though I bought one IR cam after another they had to be returned because NONE OF THEM WORKED; in all of them the sensors were too slow to capture passing animals unless they hung around in front of the cam, the cams all had blurry low-quality images, and two had malfunctioning software. Fortunately, the companies supplied shipping labels for returns. These are the cams I bought March 26- HCO ScoutGuard SG550 5MP Infrared Hunting Game & Scouting Trail Camera May 18-Stealth Cam Rogue IDVR with 36 Infrared Emitters June 1-Timber Eye 5 megapixel game camera from the Sportman's guide. Finally, June 30, I bought a 2009 Cuddeback Capture IR 5.0MP Digital Game Camera on Amazon, thinking this would solve my problem, since the first Cuddeback works so well. At first the new cam sort of worked, although the images were blurry even in daylight, it was very slow-often completely missing us when we walked back and forth in front of the cam each day to test it. After a month the cam suddenly stopped working altogether and I returned it. I've read really good reviews on Amazon on the Leaf River IR trail cams. When I first saw those tracks last winter I did send the photos to every big cat website I could think of, with no results. Apparently, there aren't any track forums, and jaguars are now officially "extinct" in North America. This forum is full of nature experts, so I posted the track photos here next, but in the meantime I did my own research and got a game cam, but its been too wary to get in front of them. For old timers, remember how the webmaster, Spike, would censor any post that was "off subject?" Didn't mean to upset those who haven't been following my jaguar saga. For the purists, there were wild turkey photos on the cam also. Since I also post photos to my blog and on Twitter, where the subjects aren't strictly segmented, I sometimes assume all people who are interested in birds are also interested in other creatures in the same environment. But if the animal finally gets on camera, that would be the only wild jaguar in North America (at least, officially). I did question the neighbor and he described the black kitten as having a "large, square" head, and short legs, and the tracks for jaguars are larger and shaped differently from both cougar and leopard tracks. The sounds we heard were nothing like a cougar, which I have heard. They were like the sounds on the National Geographic clip I already posted, and the tracks, seen clearly in the mud, next to a ruler, are in the link I already posted as well. The jaguar is the largest North American cat, with 4 1/4" wide front tracks and a metapad that fills most of the track. The game cam photo with the whiskers doesn't show what animal it is, just that something with long whiskers was messing with the camera the same night we heard the strange calls right outside our tent. I found tracks everywhere afterward, but none of them were clear, or in mud.
