Do I need permission to put up nestbox?

I live in the suburbs and I have a small yard infested with house sparrows, and I also have two dogs and one cat (that I let outside).No, I don't need the lecture about cats outside..My cat can't catch a bird, and wouldn't be happy inside anyway..

I want to put up a nest box behind a local school.There is nice creek and mudflat, as well as a big field with multiple small trees to perch on. I see them flying all over the place and I would like to put them up..

Would I need to contact anyone? Or can I simply put it up?

I'd get permission first. If you just go ahead and put it up then you may ruffle some feathers - no pun intended. Call the school and ask if the area in question belongs to them, or to someone else. Once you know who owns the land where you'd like to put up the box get their contact info and ask if you can put the nestbox up. Most landowners don't have a problem with this at all.

Am I understanding you want to put boxes up for House Sparrows? HOSPs? The Non Native Invasive bird that kills our cavity nesting Native Song birds like Blue Birds, Chickadees, Tree Swallows etc.? I get the feeling you are trying to stir up trouble because you used the word "infested" as if you know these birds are bad news. thank you Donna I ordered my van ert nestbox trap should be here tomorrow I just hope I can get the male. I have been testing out the 1 1/8 hole reducer on one of the other boxes just too make sure it would keep the hosp out and it did but he is relentless at trying too get it off he's got it all chewed up so I stuck a glove in the hole because the male bcch keeps coming back to the box when hosp leaves so sad! and I don't want him getting killed like the other one, can the bcch still get in the box? and if I keep the hole reducer on all the time will they pass on the box because of the hole size and thats why you don't put it on until they have bonded with box ? I'm letting the hosp nest take shape in hopes too hide the trap in the box any advice on when I do catch him how do I get him out of the box too i.d. and easiest way too dispose of him shale I say? thanks for all your help I am also going too try the van ert urban trap decided neighbors are close and gun would not be the best option they already think I'm NUTS because I mess with these boxes so much don't want too give them further cause ha ha!

You need to check first with your HOA (if you have one) and also with your local building authorities. In general (and this can differ by municipality), you do not require neighbor's permission to build something on your own property. But you do need to check into the legalities of building such a structure.

Kathleen44, every year I buy my daughter a special gift on Christmas. Four years ago I got a call from the hospital telling me she was a patient and needed a procedure done. She was not capable to give permission. She was very very sick and was only given a 50-50 chance to live. She was there because she was a heroin addict and was very close to death. She had left our family and we didn't know where she was for over a year. She spent almost two months in the hospital went into rehab and today is a happy healthy young woman. My gifts to her each year are to celebrate her "new life" and I consider Christmas a rebirthday. This year I am giving her a small wooden sign that says "don't stumble over what is behind you". My point in telling this story is to help you understand that you can begin a new life and live it YOUR way. If you don't want to celebrate Christmas this year maybe you can help someone less fortunate by helping at a soup kitchen or visiting a lonely person in a nursing home. Nothing makes us more human than reaching out to others. Don't stumble over what is behind you.

Mostly a repeat of below but we're having to repeat ourselves to clients weekly. Assume a minimum of 60 days lead time for the simplest items and finalize all decisions. This is recovering very slowly. Question "in stock" promises... inventory counts have been inaccurate because the people who count are out, materials get diverted, etc. Order long lead items, especially imported items (5-6 months depending) windows, exterior doors, some interior doors, any that are custom Light fixtures are often manufactured to order - we're seeing 6 months Orders are not always processed quickly as staffing has been thin at all levels High end appliances are sometimes 12 months out, Garage doors have been 6+ months out Begin cabinet layout design, finalize once framing completed stockpile what you can Be flexible w your "final" decisions Minimize changes ADDED select all appliances & plumbing fixtures select door hardware, especially color (for hinges @ door orders) select roofing colors, exterior colors

HOSPs did not come here on there own . They were brought here by someone at some time. I doubt they destroy more nests then squirrels magpies crows etc.I have HOSPs around here and I yet have to see them go into a nest box for other birds.

No, I'm not putting it up for HOSPS. That's the reason why I'm putting it somewhere else ; my yard is infested with them.I'm hoping for swallows..
I have no idea why I said "them" instead of swallows..I probably wasn't thinking

beegood...you are sadly mistaken! HOSP can and do kill other birds all the time. So far this year I had one adult Tree Swallow killed and five eggs smashed by the HOSP. I did trap and kill that male HOSP too. Now in another Tree Swallow box a HOSP went in and pecked two nestlings to death, pecked two more but somehow they lived and seem to be ok, amazingly it left two alone...not sure if they were hidden under the other four or what. HOSP are like rats with wings and need to be disposed of. They are a non native invasive species and should never have been brought here!

Never said they didn't. But so do other birds and animals. I have no problem with them even tho they they are around. Have swallow boxes and all get raised. No rats here so wouldn't know if they are like rats with wings altho I doubt it.

I would say always get permission, preferably in writing, if for no other reason than to protect yourself should other people see you and think you do not belong there
