surprise!

2nd nesting for bluebirds; 4 eggs laid late June which have since hatched. Yesterday, one of the babies left the box and was being cared for my Mom. Dad is still feeding the remaining babies in the box. Does one usually leave earlier than others (it seems very small compared to the last fledglings when they left)? Had heard that they usually leave at night and return to feed about 1 week later. Could he have possibly fallen out of the box?

While it's certainly possible he could have left prematurely, it could also be he was just the first one ready to fledge. One nesting I had a year or two ago, I saw the babies in the trees with parents feeding. I had assumed they all fledged. No sign of activity at the box, so two days later I opened the box and two more flew out. They were more than ready to go and headed right up into the tree. So it could be the ones still in the box are just not quite ready.

Thanks for the info. Sadly, I found it dead in the yard. No sign of trauma. Maybe the thunderstorm was too much for it or just too young. It was barely able to walk much less fly. Just fluttered a bit while huddling next to the trunk of a tree.

I think kayjones has an excellent idea - tuck your "dead" plant where the sprinklers will hit it and see what happens. I had a chrysothemis "Black Flamingo" that died. Thru neglect, the empty pot was stashed under a shrub and forgotten. Months later while repotting houseplants, I sought out that pot only to find that it was not available because the "Black Flamingo" had returned from the dead! I also tried to propagate a ZZ plant from a leaf. The leaf finally died and I dumped the potting soil into a big bucket to reuse. As I did so, I spied a small tuber amid the dumped soil. I repotted it and now have a small - VERY small - ZZ plant (no wonder they're expensive!). - June

Looks like a frog tree to me. The other night i went to go get some lottery ticket from the grocery store and when i came back out i jumped in the seat, arranged my groceries on the seat beside me, started the engine and looked out the windsheild to find a 3 inch frog sitting on my hood. Knowing if i started to head home the froggo would be splat, i looked around and saw some woods to the side of the store so slowly drove over to them and using a grocery sack help froggo find the woods. Jumped back into the seat backup out of spot and started to drive off only to look over at the hood on the passenger side to find another frog...drove in a circle and got second froggo off. And finally headed home...

I know yellow isn't the choice of many in the daylily world, but as Kate knows (and shares my enthusiasm) it's one of my favorite colors in daylilies. That just adds to its appeal to me.........Debra: Rudy's Sister flowered last year and, since it is the sister seedling to Rudy (which was red but failed to thrive here), we were surprised to find out it was yellow. Rudy is a Rose F Kennedy kid, so I guess it could go either way on the color. Again, with the Gomer comment-Surprise, surprise surprise...Julia: I'm paying more attention to Rudy's Sister this year then last, and was happy to find that the throat truly was green.........Maryl

I'm so sorry. I guess that means that one may have been shoved out by its siblings prematurely. It does happen sometimes, and there's nothing you could have done to prevent it. Hope the others still in the box make it out ok.
