Surprise,surprise,surprise!

As Gomer Pyle,would say,surprise,surprise,surprise!

Winter devastated several plants,in my garden.

My small,queen palm,has now put out green. Can you believe it? After all these months,this is mid august. I almost yanked it out,I'm glad I did not.

I had three plumerias in pots,I waited and finally yanked two. the roots were totally dry and dead. Just now,I was weeding and notice one pot that I had not yanked the plumeria. I started weeding the pot and notice a very healthy plumeria,about 8 inches tall.

It shows that we are too impatient,to wait for nature to respond to her own schedule.

Do you have any similar experience?

This has happened to me MANY times - I say: if you don't need the pot, leave it alone. If I need a pot that has a 'dead' plant in it, I take the whole thing out in one piece and sit it where the lawn sprinklers will hit it - most of the time it will start coming back from the roots.

I think kayjones has an excellent idea - tuck your "dead" plant where the sprinklers will hit it and see what happens. I had a chrysothemis "Black Flamingo" that died. Thru neglect, the empty pot was stashed under a shrub and forgotten. Months later while repotting houseplants, I sought out that pot only to find that it was not available because the "Black Flamingo" had returned from the dead!

I also tried to propagate a ZZ plant from a leaf. The leaf finally died and I dumped the potting soil into a big bucket to reuse. As I did so, I spied a small tuber amid the dumped soil. I repotted it and now have a small - VERY small - ZZ plant (no wonder they're expensive!). - June

Snake in the Greenhouse

If you can take one more snake story. Last week I had taken my basket out to my pepper patch to pick some green chili. When I came in I was so tired and did not feel like roasting and putting the peppers up, so I set the basket in the frige to deal with it the next day. I tended to the peppers the next day, but that night when I went into my kitchen there was a little black snake about 14 to 15 inches long sticking it's head out from the bottom of the frige. Needles to say I was shocked. Ran to get the broom and a glass jar. I tried to get the snake to come all the way out and then got the bottom of the boom on it and coaxed it into the jar. Ran out my back door and with my elbow opened the garage. I flung it so hard on to the driveway that I'm sure that little snake had one heck of a headache. When my husband called that night I was frantic about how could a snake get into the house. I remembered the next day that while I was picking my peppers I had set the basket down on the ground to reach under a pepper plant. That rascal must have gotten into my basket and was in for a real surprise when he wound up in my fringe. I hope he was all alone. Snakes don't run in packs do they? I still get upset when I open the frige.

Just bought double wide office trailer

Greetings All, I just bought a doublewide office trailer and am having it moved. There are some issues with what looks like T111 siding. The "engineers" who designed these had siding that consists of an 8' piece of T111 with a 2' strip above it. They used some1X4 to bridge the gap and paint and caulk. There are a few leaks, but it looks manageable. Most of the leaks are coming from the joint (surprise, surprise, surprise). I am thinking of replacing the T-111 but using some sort of flashing to go under the top one and over the bottom to seal the joint. What do you all think?? I got the thing for a song from a local university that used it for classrooms, so I can afford to put some money into it. The interior looks good. Have even thought of creating a shell around the outside with SIPS panels and then put a metal roof over it. Thoughts? Suggestions?

The only thing I have come back this late in the season (so far at least) was the poinsettia that is right next to the greenhouse. It started growing again maybe 3-4 weeks ago and is now about a foot tall. It was not in a pot but I thought it was dead for sure. Most everything else that came back did so in April-May. It is a nice surprise!
