A female Prothonotary Warbler is building a nest in the Gilbertson PVC nestbox located in my yard.

In this photo she is on the ground gathering nesting material.

Wow! That is amazing! I have only seen them a few times & always around water-not the ocean, just swampy places. Is that house especially for Prothonotary warblers or for other cavity nesters? Where are you located? That is so special! Do you have other cavity nesters? (Full of questions aren't I?)

Actually it is built for bluebirds but any cavity nester which will fit through a 1 1/2" opening could use it. I'm located in rural SW Indiana and had carolina chickadees fledge 7 nestlings and now have a pair of bluebirds with 5 eggs.

I've been watching a webcam on a Bald Eagle nest in Decorah, Iowa since 3 eggs hatched in April. All three of the Eaglets have survived and fledged now, and seldom return to the nest tree. The cam is due to shut down soon. Here they are with Mom, on a branch about 10' above the nest: The nest is 80' up in a Cottonwood, directly over a trout stream, and right next to a state trout hatchery. Needless to say, the babies had a fine diet of fresh fish. The UStream site has had over 160 million hits since April.

That is awesome. Do you have a stream on your property? I was wondering because I read they like to nest over water.

Thanks for the possible id. I did look it up and I don't think it is a Prothonotary Warbler because of the lighter markings. The trees in the photo are along a creek, but the creek is dry most of the time and this was during a lengthy drought. We are probably 200 miles from the western edge of the typical habitat for the Prothonotary Warbler.
