We have Coops/sharpshinners here like crazy, and they do frequent the yard, but they seem VERY leery of us. Would they put a nest that close to us when there are an additional 30 acres of good stout trees just about any direction from the yard? This nest is fairly dense looking, not like a dove or cuckoo would put together. I will start watching for 'poops' since most birds eventually have a whitewashing effect from coming and going. THe nearest water is about 200 yards away, unless it keeps raining. Then it will be about 35. I wish I had been paying more attention. I would know a) what had been building this nest, and b) how long it's been around.

Thanks for the info Cyp. The pole does have all kinds of wires, telephone, electric, cable TV, and a big cable that stablizes the pole. It just seems as though it is so close to the pole that it is likely to have something to do with it. Electocution seems possible although I see birds on those wires all the time, and I suspect the GH owls sit there frequently because I hear pairs calling from the woods in back to roughly that spot quite often. I kind of thought geographically, the bird flu was probably out. I have never heard of owls really being big victims of West Nile either, but that doesn't mean they aren't. I thought that a bird like that may lose sight of a big obstacle (particularly one that sticks out in an open area) if it in the throes of a hunt. The area next to our driveway is open space on both sides. There are about 3 or 4 spruce trees spread over 350 feet of straight dirt drive. The open space on one side is left to grow all spring and summer and was recently mowed. The other side is pasure, so it makes up about a 2 1/2 acre treeless, non-lawn type area. We have added about 200 native berrying shrubs in the vicinity during the last year or two. I suspect there is plenty of good hunting out there in the way of skunks, rabbits, mice, etc. I've seen a fox hunting out there quite a bit also. When someone mentioned a long ear last night, I was beat and didn't check the size. It is a large bird. In fact, I would not want to mess with the likes of his talons. The amazing part is the size of his feet in general. I would say his legs are as widea as two of my fingers. They look formidable. Although it is very sad, it is so cool to be able to examine such an interesting creature up close.

Animals can be so strange....you may put all your time and effort into building just the right box, selecting a 'perfect' site, and then....nothing. Or the opposite may happen, and it will seem as if they were sitting around WAITING for you to get their new home up and going for them. I think it's different for everybody, but you will have to be PATIENT. Years ago we got a booklet from the DNR that had blueprints and general info for houses that were specific for each species. We looked it over and chose to make wood duck boxes, thinking they would have a place to nest by our pond. What we learned, in fact, was that many species simply don't care if a box is not "designed" for them...if they can get their bodies through the hole, there's nobody already at home (depending on the animal this may not matter either) and the place seems safe enough, it's a done deal. Not only will screech owls use a duck box as a day haven, they will indeed nest and rear young in them. There is a slough I frequent that has three duck boxes on it, and during one spring I discovered one particular box was home to a nest of screechies. I think the slough was dry that year, but usually this box is surrounded by about 2 1/2 feet of water...a rough first flight for any chick. I can't recall how many chicks were in that nest...I will have to try to dig out the animal album and find the photos. But they will use a duck box. When we first hung out duck boxes here at our place, I was getting frustrated waiting. It was something like three years before we finally found a nest, and then all three boxes had action!! It's worth the wait, so hang in there. But I'm still waiting for bats to use their house....I don't think they need any extra places with all the shagbark hickories. But the winner in my Crazy Nester category goes to the bluebirds at my dad's place. For the past three years, there has been a pair of bluebirds nesting in his martin house. Not a thing to be seen of any martins, but these blues are shoulder to shoulder with house sparrows and to this day I don't yet understand how they are pulling this off.

Oh, I'm terrible with owls Catherine! I have burrowing owls on my life list only because they are diurnal. Part of my problem is that I myself am not a night "owl." The other problem I have is that I'm much more of a bird photographer than a bird watcher and its hard to take pictures if birds that come out after sundown. To tell you the truth I have only recently learned the sound of saw whet, western screech, and pygmy owls, and I'm trying to teach myself the calls of elf owls before they arrive to nest in the saguaros sometime next month. If you are interested in owls however, Arizona is a great place. 13 of the 19 North American owl species live here at some point during the year. But the Southwest is a birders paradise anyway. There is an enormous range of habitat, from low desert to high alpine tundra and the proximity to the tropics brings in a good number of Mexican and Central American species. I added my 120th species to my Arizona list today, after living here for only a few months. It took me two and a half years to get to that number in Colorado. Sure I have been out submitting checklists far more often than I typically do, but it also goes to show just how much diversity there is down here.
