I have a third nesting!!

Ok, my momma blue is a bit of a freak cause she is on her second egg of the third nesting however....her second nesting hasn't fledged yet! She built a new nest in another box and started laying eggs on Sunday. Today is day 17 for her second nesting. I thought they may fledge today but just a bunch of peeking...I am thinking tomorrow. Daddy Blue is going to be having his hands full taking care of mom and seven fledglings!

Momma Blue laid six eggs her first nesting and seven for her second nesting. Wonder how many she will be laying this time??

Congratulations on your first two successful nestings. That female is quite the Fertile Myrtle! I see you're in Zone 4, but your pair still got an early start.

We're on our second nesting of five eggs, which should hatch today or tomorrow. Four fledged from the first nesting. I feel like I'm in heaven when the yard is full of bluebirds.

Yes she started very early for our area. We had so much cold and wet weather during her first nesting that if I hadn't been feeding mealworms and waxwworms I really don't think the nestlings would have made it.

I need to check on mine today Gary. My male is fairly skittish, and he like to do a big "fly in your face to intimidate you" kinda thing. I never get bombed by the birds in my yard, and I think it's because I am out there so much. This particular male though is skittish, and it really worries him for me to actually touch his box! He is fine as long as I don't touch it. :o) I may take my step stool and an umbrella out so that it's easier on him and me!! I will let you know. My dh made mine. He just took a narrow piece of wood/board and drilled holes into it which he insterted and glued wooden dowels. The upper bottom has predrilled holes for the screws and I just screw into into the back of the nestbox without any problems. I have been just redoing the mylar each year as I have it duct taped onto the dowels. Donna

I checked this afternoon, and there are five eggs. Last time I had a third nesting there were only three eggs in the last clutch. This is a very strange year. Pretty exciting to think I may be helping add fifteen new Blues into the world. The babies from clutch number two are still around. I will be curious to see if the adults chase them away again as soon as clutch number three hatches.

Hard to tell for sure, but by the coloring, looks like a Common Yellowthroat. Are you finding them at the base of the building below a window? Most birds that die near homes or buildings and don't have any other signs of trauma most likely hit a window. They see the reflection of trees/branches/leaves etc in the window and don't realize it is a reflection...they try to "fly through the opening into the trees" so to speak and smack the glass. BN

Wow, that is amazing Donna. She's already started a new nest before her young have fledged! I'm so excited for you. The only time I had a third nesting here, she only laid 3 eggs on her third clutch. Your momma blue is quite the layer though. Six and then seven is just highly unusual. Please keep us informed on how many she lays for clutch number three.

Donna, that is great about the third nesting. I will be anxious to know how many eggs she will lay this time too. I have blues building a nest in another box which I want to move. I know you have already answered me about moving the box. Waiting for my husband to move it. He has been really, busy, but hopefully tomorrow he will do it. No eggs yet.

Well the second nesting started fledging yesterday..five went yesterday and so far one this morning. On checking the third nesting yesterday there were three eggs. I will keep you updated...

Donna, How many eggs did she end up laying? I'm curious to know since she seems to be quite the prolific layer.

Kendra...she laid six eggs! Can you believe that? 6,7 and now 6 again.

That is just amazing. What a productive little gal she is. I've never had a Bluebird lay more than five eggs. I think this is just wonderful. That she was able to feed seven babies is incredible. Please keep us updated on how they do with nest number three.
