Third Nest

I got what I wished for! I haven't visited the Gilwood box out back in a few days because of all the rain and thunder. I went out tonight and there was a complete EABL nest with its first egg. Put up Sparrow spooker. I'm so excited they'll be around for a while longer. Their second clutch fledged 6/12, and they have been bringing them around for mealworms. Will keep you posted on how many eggs are laid this time around. Last time they nested three times they followed this same pattern. First nest in Gilwood, second in box inside dog fence, and then back to the Gilwood.

Congrats Kendra! This is the first time ever that I have had a third nesting! The way my crazy female is I am wondering if she would go for a fourth?? Normal years I have first nestings fledge around the 4th of July and still get a second nesting. This time my third nesting will be hatching around the 4th.....

I checked this afternoon, and there are five eggs. Last time I had a third nesting there were only three eggs in the last clutch. This is a very strange year. Pretty exciting to think I may be helping add fifteen new Blues into the world. The babies from clutch number two are still around. I will be curious to see if the adults chase them away again as soon as clutch number three hatches.

Thanks for the response Kendra. I'll just use my mesh bag because it has a draw string. I DID however remove the female to trim her wings in case of escape, because with just the 3 other being MALES, her survival is most important to me. I figure with the bag open inside the trap, if they try to escape, their only way out is BACK through the bag, thus only bringing them back to the DRST. It's almost sunset, but so far I still have the 4 form yesterday. However, I re-baited it TWICE in the last two days. Something took the bait today but didn't go in the trap. There are still a few HOSP in the area. Also, I need some OTHER advice. WASPS have invaded one of my nestboxes pairs! One box had at least 3 WASPS in it at once! I'm a guy and I'm STILL SKITTISH around bees. I DO NOT like being stung! I'll also note of sialis. Thanks again

Wow, that is amazing Donna. She's already started a new nest before her young have fledged! I'm so excited for you. The only time I had a third nesting here, she only laid 3 eggs on her third clutch. Your momma blue is quite the layer though. Six and then seven is just highly unusual. Please keep us informed on how many she lays for clutch number three.

That is just stunning. He looks more like the color of a parakeet. I'm sure you already know this, but since there is no blue pigment in feathers, these guys must have a different feather structure that still refracts the light to look blue, but in a different shade. Very fascinating. Thanks for those great shots.
