Some new photos to share

Hi all,

It's been 2 weeks since our last post, and there's been lots of activity around here, so we'd like to share some more recent pictures of our birds again now. :)

We've had a lot of nice photo-ops with the Blue Jays:

More Goldfinch shots:

Another White-crowned Sparrow:

Our father Cardinal (they have 2 real Cardinal babies and 1 cowbaby):

The Titmice have fledglings now too:

We also have a bunch of baby Carolina Wrens:

This is Woody, our father Downy. He's a beatnik, but he has two babies (a girl and a boy):

This is Nathan... our father Nuthatch. He and his mate Natalie have at least 1 fledgling that we've seen:

Hi Kirsten, Yes very pretty Pics I have never seen the lewisia's before. Lots of these are new to me as I only started on Cacti and Succulents late last year. Great Pics Thanks for the peek into Chelsea, and where about in Wales is the Bodnant Gardens. Cheers....MM

Oh yay, new pictures! Thanks to all the contributors. north53, I have tons of driftwood that I have collected that I want to incorporate into a garden but haven't yet. Yours looks so natural there. Beautiful garden! sandyslopes, love all the guest appearances in your pictures. What a refuge you have there for critters! catkin, thanks for the information on the Trifoilium rubens. It seems like it would fill in nicely between more upright plants. I've added it to my list. Isn't wintersowing a blast? I just love it. If you want some coneflower seed this fall, I'd be happy to send you some. I mentioned elsewhere that my 'Pow Wow White' and 'Magnus' both grew identical to the parent plants. Can't guarantee they will do it again but might be worth a try?

I'm enjoying all these wonderful pictures! Thanks so much for sharing. Jim, what's a lech well? Your mom looks like a fun person. Murraysmom, cute kids! Were you the only girl? I was an only child. Always wished for siblings. Still do! Jem, it's great that you know so much about your family history. That's a rare photo to have. I'm so spoiled when it comes to old photographs. Two of my grandparents were opera singers, so I have their publicity stills from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Plus my dad (their son) was an avid amateur photographer who loved to photograph people. Many of my friends and relatives appreciate to this day the pictures he took back at a time when not many people had cameras, at least not good ones. My mom was his favorite model, but he also documented every bit of my childhood. I have thousands of prints, slides, and negatives. Here I am on vacation in Quebec. The little boy spoke only French, and wouldn't share his crayons unless I asked for each color in French. I learned quickly. ;-) In the "play date" thread I talked about growing up in an apartment building with my two best friends, Pat and Carolyn. Here they are. Here's one of my mom before she and my dad were married. And after. One of my mom's sisters And my grandmother on stage (in a dark wig).

Great pictures! A great way to start the morning. Of all the pictures I think my favorites are the second blue jay pic, the titmouse and the fledgling blue jays. Looks like they're giving you the eye. Thanks for p[osting. Marg

Thanks all,

And a quick update on our 2nd nest of Blues... we did a nest check today (Day 11). Their feathers are coming in nicely... and we're looking forward to their fledging on our about June 8th.

Good grief! These photos are off the chart....FABULOUS! I can't pick a single favorite but "if" I could, it would be the 2nd Blue Jay photo. Kenn, these are the best ever!

Another quick update on our Family Blue...
This is Day 17 for the 6 nestlings pictured above... Fledge Watch is now in progress, with lots of peeking little faces in the hole. We hope to see them all fly real soon.

Great slideshow! My fledglings are still hanging out in the trees, not coming down much and relying on the parents to take them mealworms. They're cute, but it's hard to get photos.

Thanks Liz,

Missy's broods typically stay in the tall trees for 7-10 days after fledging... and then they all come home to our deck and yard. We fledged our 2nd nest of the season today (6 more baby blues safely in the trees!), and we already can't wait for their homecoming time.

Meanwhile, here's one more shot of our five 1st-nesters, and their friend the Carolina Wren:

Thanks for sharing....now I've gotta go build a box or two. Only problem is, there seems to be a wren that rules the back yard. Maybe in the front where there aren't many shrubby areas?

Kenn, those photos are fabulous! The baby Blues are just SO cute. That shot of the 5 fledglings looking at the camera is a great moment.

Your Blues must have abundant food sources and a relatively safe nest spot to successfully fledge so many babies.

Thanks terrene,

We provide a lot of supplements to their ample insect diet... mealworms, suet nuggets, raisins, and scrambled egg. They eat all of these food sources daily and they are all vital and healthy birds.
We also help to eliminate all the major safety hazards with safe housing, and (mostly passive) predator control.

Missy and Mr.B have successfully fledged 41 baby blues so far over 3 seasons, and we only know of 1 lost to the wild. She is about finished building her 3rd nest of the 2010 season (her 9th) in our box. They currently have 11 fledglings in the trees, and we are on egg-watch for the 3rd nest as I write this.

It's hard not to be proud of this precious and prolific pair. But we know they are not our birds... we are just happy to be their people.

Your blues appear to be amazingly comfortable in their surroundings (your backyard) and to produce so many beautiful fledglings is remarkable and such a welcome addition to our enviornment.

Your photos always put a smile on my face. I look forward to them.
