Awesome!!! Those are my wife's favorites. Finally, after many years, we now have a couple that have started hanging around our feeders. We are still waiting for a pileated to come around. We've had the usual cast of red bellied, hairy, and downies. We also had a sapsucker very early this spring. Enjoyed the pictures.

It was a great day for woodpeckers. I'm with you, I want a pileated, also. I thought I saw one once but it was a few seconds only and enough of a distance away that I will never be sure.

Starlings are a non native bird and considered a pest in the US. They take over nesting areas from our native cavity nesting birds such as the woodpecker. So, I would prefer the woodpecker be a resident in my tree rather than starlings. If a starling or house sparrow were nesting in any of my bird houses or natural cavities, I would remove the eggs and the nest in hopes that a native bird would take up residence.

Hi ribs1, It's a gazebo style feeder, made of metal or aluminum most-likely that I bought at Menards. I feed strictly hulled sunflower seeds, albeit they are very expensive, but there is no waste whatsoever. I also have a suet feeder underneath and about 5' away from it, that I built, and holds two blocks. So far the Red-headed haven't ventured to it, but I bet they will, given enough time. Dax

Thanks guys. When I lived in Portland, OR one of the reasons my at that time girlfriend wished to return to the mid-west (she being from Indiana) was because she remembered all so well the chitter-chatter and abundance of birds. That was some time ago though. Dax

don't know about your woodpeckers but i have a pair of lewis's woodpeckers who have nested here last 3 years. i also have lots of orioles and i put out fruit and jelly and watermelon for the orioles, the young Lewis's love the jelly and watermelon and eat lots of fruit and they come back every year. i also have downeys and hairys and flickers that use the same feeders as the Lewis's

I've never seen a Red-headed Woodpecker - the markings are so distinct they look almost fake.

The pictures are great, but the video is really surprising, to me anyway. The red-belly is trying his best to scare the dove away from the feeder but the dove just stands its ground. That is one tough dove - I don't usually think of doves as tough.

Thanks,

Claire

Claire,

They looked air brushed don't they? I've been looking out the window for weeks (praying) they would return.

Thanks,

Between the red-headed, red bellied and cardinal it was a red letter (or red feather) day for you.

Fabulous photos! They are so beautiful. I am in eastern NC and a pair raised a baby in our yard 2 years ago. It was so exciting. A "peanut butter log" was their favorite spot at the feeders.

What are you feeding them? Ours like BOSS even though we have a couple suet feeders. As for the pileateds, we have seen them occasionally in our area----and have heard them even more--but have yet to draw them in. Last night, we had 4 male rose breasted grosbeaks, three females, and our first hummingbirds and orioles. Still waiting on the indigos.

Thank you all. I feel fortunate to be so lucky.

I feed sunflower hearts all the way. I've heard the Rose-breasted grosbeaks so I know they're here & I've seen a hummingbird while I was filling my Oriole feeders. So far two new bird arrivals this year: Eastern Meadowlarks and a Northern Mockingbird (not at feeders).

Indeed, indeed!

These birds are here every other minute at the feeder.
There's three of them, total. Two have to be mates. I would guess they may be bringing seed to their youngsters??? I don't know though.

Dax, beautiful pictures! My redheads chase after the red-bellies but the chickadees chase the redheads :)
I have pileateds on the property all the time but they don't usually go to my feeders. My rarest woodpecker visitor is the red cockaded, they don't come around too often.
Thanks for sharing.
