Blue Birds and Chickadee's

Our blue birds must have nested else where for their first nest, but have returned to our yard and have a nest and one egg. Today they are busy chasing off the cowbirds.

We put up a second box in a side yard and it was empty, so we recently moved it to another spot and with-in 4 days I found signs of what I thought was a Chickadee nest and now I see her peek her head out every time I am in that part of the yard. How easily is it to spook her. I would love to check and see how many eggs there are but I do not want to scare her off. Yesterday I started to check but as I approached and touched the box and just about had it opened the Chickadee swooped down and sat on a very close branch, just daring me to open it, so I backed off.
